Beta II engine build ( hyundai)
Hey guys,
My name is Andrew, and i have been viewing your forum for quite some time now. Just reading others posts. Great community and some very knowledgable people on here!
Yes i know its a hyundai #1 lol
I am building a beta II (01 up elantra 03 up tiburon) 4 cyl engine.
I plan on keeping the stock 6750 redline and running about 17 PSI. the internals consist of hyper u pistons 8.5:1 gold coated on the dishes. Shot peened rods. Everything else is still up in the air. I just wanted to get some advice from experenced enging builders on what has worked for them. coatings, ballancing, etc.
I am not exactly sure. even after all my searching on here what is a winning combo for a setup. I have the engine tore down and am having it hot tanked soon.
Here are some pics of the current setup as well as the engine.
It has 15k on the junk motor.
thanks so much,
Andrew

yes i know honda-tech. but i fig some helping words that could be generalized about 4 cyl EFI engine building.
Thanks for the good wishes.

it does weigh quite a bit, you can pick it up on your own but it is a bit of a struggle ;-)
Is ballancing rotating assemblies benificial if i plan on sticking with the stock redline? how about bearing coatings? valve coatings? Swain offers these services, but i am really wondering if they are 'worth it"
Thanks again guys,
Andrew

Nice to see some more Korean cars getting the turbo treatment.
Your setup sounds nice, but I am worried about using hypereutectic pistons... Hypereutectic pistons expand a lot less and scuff less than forged or normal cast pistons, but they are also significantly more brittle. I wouldn't hesitate to use them in an N/A motor (Keith Black's are my piston of choice), but in a situation where detonation might occur, I don't think I would use them!

Balancing the rotating assembly is always a good idea when you've already got the motor apart, if money is no issue. I am also concerned about the hyper U pistons, why not just go with forged? Since it's for turbo.
hmm. people have been having some good sucess with these pistons. I am shooting for 280-300 WHP usually guys with these are hitting the 400HP marks.
Here is a pic of the pistons
thanks for the advice on the ballancing, i think i will have at least the crank and flywheel done.
Thanks!
Andrew
we're stiill old skool @ hyundai, still pressed in wristpins. For those that dont know. Hyundai engines are build on mitsu designs. My engine design is from the late 80's
the beta series motor is the platform of choice over there, just like the japs koreans are CRAZY for high HP engines. Labor is cheap so it is not uncomming to have many 400 WHP street cars on the road.
There is lots of aftermarket in korea.. the hard part is getting it here... from quad throttle bodies, to duel valve springs.

Nice! clean as hell
crank and fw are about all that need balancing, maybe weigh the rods and pistpns just to make sure they are all within a gram of each other... thuroughly check and make sure the oil galleys are clean.

the company name is tigerlily. although you need to know korean to view the website . DOH!
Thanks for the advice on the ballancing. I am getting the block hot talked and it only has 15k on it so hopefully that will take care of everything.
as for the dremel.. no, they are machined in not cast.

the hyundai scene is really big in puerto rico i was there last week in the track and there were some running 10' and 11' theres one running low 9' on the 1.5 liter engine,if you need a phone number for the shop let me know, they have a street car hyundai running 9.90 on a automatic transmition,i have a lot of magazines from there and believe me i was impress
i developed and fabed everythign myself.
my turbo is going to be a t3 on my new setup. That another thing i need to deside.. perhaps some can suggest a good wheel/trim. for my goals.
I am using a spearco race core 17x6x3
I fabed a secondary injection manifold. Using OEM 190's for the primaries and 360 cc for the secondarys. Using a split second injector controler as well as the 6212 unit to control timing.

I wonder who does your glassbeading ;] And great image server too;]
Since that i'm 3000 miles away and my aol sucks: I'll give my 2 cents (or better yet, you can get online this afternoon sometime (remember 4pm there is 12am here ;])
I wouldn't bother coating your rod bearings...it would effect wear and obviously make a tight clearence even tighter...there are some local pulling truck guys that used to get everythign moly coated and what ended up happenign is that the bearing clearence was to tight, and the high revving v8's literally made minced meat of their bottom ends as it didn't work like intended -- again for your goals it's not needed IMO
A T3 setup??? err....Why not stick with somethign that fits your manifold...gt2540r or gt2835 or somethign...you know i'm going with the 2871 on my 240 once I get back outa the sandbox... I really don't think you'll like the big turbine on your engine...you saw how it worked on my altima...and that had .4 more displacement and was still laggy...I'll just reference you to Ray's setup...while his doesn't have the highest HP crown like alot of guys on this site go for...what his car does have is 300hp and 300ft lbs at 3400/3500 rpm...albiet the downfall of that is lotsa tire spin, you saw how his setup at 15 pounds ran - very fast!
'Oldschool' pressed in pins....puhhhlease....pressed in for life...leave that C clip crap for lawnmower engines ;] ;] ;]
Good luck with it though bud...I wish I could back home to do this with ya....hopefully you have it running by my 2 week leave time!!

Switching my manifold/turbo for 2 reasons. I would like to have 2.5 DP on there, and my current cast manifold does not allow for the proper clearances.
just a simple log style.
The turbo i was looking at was a TRUE super 60 trim. so many people sell "super 60's' with just a reg 60 trim. they flow close to 32lbs and you can fig about 100hp per 10 lb.
I dont mind a bit of lag. good for traction at 17 PSI ;-)
Also... these turbos are dirt cheap compaired to my other alternative. t28 with a t4 compressor. my current turbo will take a shat if i try to push it that hard.
Bearing coating and clearances arnt an issue. the build up is in the thousandths and it only ment for 'dry' lubrication. I have decided against this. I will surly get my crank ballanced as well as my flywheel.

Hey buddy
Excuse this scattered response, i'm sure you can figure it all out :]
-A super sucky as ray would say lol...why not just buy his t28, and purchase a greddy turbo extension for it??? That may do the trick :]
-t3 based turbos are very cheap...Jason built both of mine for bone cheap...MJM is our friend... (BTW: See what his prices would be on a GT2871r would be...)
-Lag is gay...I learned that in my car, and that didn't even have very much at that...nothign can compare to insstant throttle response like in rays Sentra...
-What RPM do you expect to make 17 at...3800/4000 RPM?? I'm not sure how much air your car flows down low, but I know by looking at countless dynos that most hondas don't throw enough down low for my taste...FI Adams car...nothing nothign nothign nothing then WHAM for 2k...
-Ever look into getting the lightened pulley upfront??? I was always happy with mine, and obviously you'll want that when you goto Exton to get it balanced
-Are you purchasing the manifold or are you going to create your own and have emil weld it up??? I'd love for you to take the tiem to fab up your own :]
As always man, i'd love to be back home helping you do this step by step with ya, but I've got faith in ya!! As always take your time and check it twice (somethign that you do all the time....well except that time the IC hose went Hiya! at your shop lol)
Good stuff Andrew - keep putting the pics on my server so I can keep up with the build!!
(ALSO BTW: That comment about the dremel was pretty funny...as I thought the same thing at first ;]
