Default 1993 Yamaha Seca?

After much debate and research on this forum I've decided to buy a used bike to learn on before i buy brand new. This bike looks pretty clean. Anyone know if this will be a reliable bike to learn on? Any experiance with this bike?
thanks.

Not me, but it looks nice. Is it a 500?

It's a 600, but it only has 8 valves and one cam IIRC. An EX500 will outrun it. But you do have a nice bike there, they are pretty reliable and low maintenance.

Thanks that's what I wanted to hear. I wanted something cheap and reliable to get started with. Don't wanna buy brand new for my first bike and drop it.

Now I do have a question, and this is purely out of curiosity, not insult.

At 7 this morning you said you were going to buy new, because you didn't want to worry about reliability.

Now, here it is going on 4 the same day, and you want to buy a 13 year old bike?

Don't get me wrong, I'm all about some old bikes. Hell, the one I ride hasn't seen a re-design in 18 years. But a 13 year old bike is STILL a 13 year old bike.

What does it matter? He's making the smart/correct choice by buying used for a first bike. People can change thier minds

Anyway I almost got the Seca as my first bike. I did a lot of research on it and it is a very good begginer bike which will hold you over for your first year or so. You'll love it!

EDIT: How much are you paying for it? Mileage?

Yeah I was set on new or nothing... but after reading some more posts and friends at my job who have bikes. I changed my mind. I came across this bike through a friend who knows the guy that owns this bike. So I can trust the bike. I wanted new b/c I'm completely noob about what to look for in a bike, how to check it's condition, maintance, and scared to death to get a bike that breaks down after my first week.

The bike is a 93' w/ 10k miles on it. Well maintaned and always garaged. He's asking $2,000 but I think if I bring $1500 cash he'll sell it. Thanks for all the help. I think I'll like this forum better than eg.

Its a good bet that thing will run forever. Or 300,000 miles. Whichever comes first.

Yup you can't beat yamaha motors. Definitely try to talk him down to $1500.. I think $2000 is a bit high honestly.

The seca is fine mechanically(**** I rememebr the first seca model). good stater if your a little timid and want to be careful. And $2k is TOO much for this bike. While it may be worth that much because it clean and there is a blue book record of it, no one will pay that much.

Cool, like I said I was just curious. Good reasons to want new, too.

From that picture I can see I was wrong in thinking the Seca was turbo charged. Wasn't there an 80's bike that was turbo'ed stock?

There was a turbo Seca also. There was a z1r kawi turbo. A honda CX500 turbo, a 650 also. The GPZ750 turbo. And an XN85 or something. I think thats it.

The GPZ was a good performer. The rest were not, even handicapped for their time period.

I always called the 750 triple the widow maker, not the 500.

Wonder how the Seca worked out for the OP ??

My buddy has had a SecaII since the late 90's and refuses to sell it eventhough he has a new Gixxer 1k. LoL
