Default alternator trouble again

ok, i found out my alternator wasnt shot. for some reason the adjuster bolt snapped in half. i got a bolt in there to hold it all tight and got my belt back on. well when i started to car it was squeeling like crazy. i thought it might have been dirty, but it didnt go away after a drive with it. i thought it would be ok so i drove to a car meet, and low and behold i smelled a little burning rubber and the squeeling stopped. i got to the meet to realize my belt wasnt there. i guess the belt got so hot that it burned off? could this have been caused by the alternator not sitting 100% aligned with the crank pulley? like when i had the long bolt in it, it moved a bit back and forth, but i got the top adjuster bolt on and tightened it, it didnt seem to move. maybe it moved enough while it was all spinning? any input would be great
