Default "finger nails on chalkboard" coming from timing cover area? Any ideas?

Ok so this only started happening recently. I hear a noise coming from drivers side of the motor like someone running their finger nails on a chalkboard really fast. This noise only happens ocassionally and almost always happens when I'm releasing the clutch after shifting or while starting from a stop. It only makes the noise up to about 3k-3.5K RPM. Then it won't happen for like 20 minutes. We got some bad rain here in Chi yesterday and it did it a little more frequently last night than it usually does. No rain today, went back to a more occasional noise. So what do you think? Water pump? Oil pump? Something else? I will be replacing the water pump next weekend because I have had a brand new Honda WP sittin in a box for months now...

it sounds like maybe the water pump. you woundnt want that to lock up, happend on my bro's crx and luckily only stretched the timing belt instead of breaking. this brought on doing his mini me swap

Yeah thats what I was thinking, and my dumb *** left my new WP at my Dad's in Milwaukee, I told myself last weekend when I was up there looking through my misc parts and grabbed the WP "Oh I wont need this for a while..." Yeah and now I do so I have to wait until I venture up there next weekend... Any other opinions here? Or personal experiences?

hmmmm.....sounds like my problem, but not exactly....my sound is more like a deeper tone constant crunching sound in the motor....I know this kid with the same problem as me but his is really loud...it sounds like the motor has NO oil in it but that NOT the problem, trust me... tell ya the truth, i don't know if it's even a problem or just something these motors do but if i had my choice, crunching isn't a good sound for any motor...anyone know anything about that???? sorry i couldn't help HF708....

**** dude, u better pull that cover ASAP and make sure u dont have the same prob i did. my cam gear bolt backed itself out last year, causing the gear to osscilate (sp?) and it shattered the end of my camshaft. it ground down the timing cover, hopefully that's not the noise you're hearing.

Edit: when it broke i lost all power in the middle of traffic due to the timing going off about 30 degrees and my EGTs were over 1600, i was lucky not to burn up my valves...
