Default Porting b18a head(pics and ?'s)

Well i started porting my spare LS head this weekend. It took 4 days to get 1 port partially done(2 days were spent practicing on an old single cam head). Im not really taking off that much metal...im really just getting rid of all the casting flaws. I have enlarged the bowl area a little and im gonna make the port exit a little bigger. Nothing crazy. I also kinfe edged the seperator. Heres some pics of what i have done so far. I have a little more work on that one port but its basically done(gonna smooth it out a little more).

Dremel tool is your friend

Bowl area(bad pic but you get the idea)

A little more smoothing to be done and shell be ready to go

Bling Blang!

Now for my questions. Ive nicked the valve guide a few times so i thought i might just shave it down a little for better flow. Will this hurt anything? I just dont wanna weaken the guide. Now for my next question...i know that you want to leave the intake ports a little rough to get better fuel atomization...but exactly how rough should you leave it? What grit would be good for the final grind to get the texture that you want? Thanks in advance

PS-any tips or opinions would be greatly appreciated...especially if you know of a certain area that needs more attention than others(such as the bowl area, mouth, seperator).

Kind of curious. I though of doing my own porting on my extra head laying around!

I do know that you have to be careful on the exhaust side! You do not want to change he angle of the ports. If you look at the exhaust port you can tell one side is flowing to the port at an angle unlike the other which is flowing straight ahead.

I also heard that you want to be careful on the exhaust ports or you will ruin the head. There is a water line/jacket for the coolant under those ports! I only heard that so take it with a grain of salt until others respond to my comments>

looks good but if thats the intake side your smoothing it out to much it needs to be rough to atomize fuel properly if not you have problems with fuel puddling inside the intake ports of the head

but good gob man keep us posted did you flow test if before ?

id like to see a before after cfm test of an amatuer port job

Luckily i noticed that before i started. When knife-edging the seperator i was careful not to take off too much from the right side of the port. It just seems like angling it in more would cause more turbulence in the port.

Thats why ive always loved dealing with you guys. It seems like yall really know the potential of the LS and actually carry products for it

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by LG_R32 &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">looks good but if thats the intake side your smoothing it out to much it needs to be rough to atomize fuel properly if not you have problems with fuel puddling inside the intake ports of the head

Nah thats the exhaust side...you can tell because there isnt an injector hump at the top of the port. And unfortunately i couldnt get it on a flowbench. If i had that kinda money i woulda just paid a pro to do it all for me

Its gonna take a while to get it all done...but this is my first time and i want to make sure its done correctly. Im just taking my time and learning as i go. And im making sure not to rush or skip any process. Ive done ALOT of research on porting in the past 2 weeks. But ive only found articles about porting and polishing in general. I learned a great deal but i wanted some input from people that have actually done an LS head. Because each head has certain areas that need more attention than others.

Keep the questions and comments coming. Im excited about this project. After this i can say that ive pretty much done it all

Don't forget about me.

My head porter cut my valve guides right down. No problems at all.

I dont really have any tips because i just started myself. I use 4 different sanding drums, 3 different stones, and an abrasive wheel. Im just taking a little off at a time starting with 120grit(i think) and ending with the abrasive wheel then 600 grit. Just take your time and dont cut any corners...thats all the advice i have because thats all i know right now. Im sure ill have more in a few weeks

it looks good man ive done ls heads the separoator is the weak link in an ls head imo and my head porters opinion we have seen the best flow gains from knife edging and thinning it out as well as making sure its still rough on the intake side

good luck

Well i havent really worked on it too much this week because ive felt like ****...but im gonna go out there and mess with it tonight. That high pitched grinding noise just drills into your head when you already have a migraine

It really isnt that hard...just time consuming if its done correctly. All you need is a steady hand and ALOT of patience. It would also help to do alot of research like i did...i learned alot of general info about porting that really comes in handy. I wouldnt recommend doing a crazy port job for your first time, but something as mild as what im doing shouldnt be that bad at all.

Oh yea Ill be taking my camera back over to Seans place this weekend to take more pics if he wants so be on the look out. He's taking his time (which he should) and I help a little when he wants to take a break but DAMN it's time consuming. We'll be done in...probably about a month lol. Regardless it's gonna be worth it and what's really the **** is when you can tell someone you did your own headwork
