Chain And Sprockets - Did a Search
ok, its time for a new chain and sprocket set - and my GF needs it on her bike as well... so i am torn on whether to bring it to my local guy who said he would do it for $300 flat/bike or to get all the tools and do it myself...
From what i've read on sportbikes.net and here, I am going to need a chain tool, a stand, and the tools to get all the goodies off...
so - the dilema is this, should I do 520? or leave it at 530? I do wheelie and what not from time to time, and I do ride my bike hard, so I dont want to replace sprockets and chains every month....
Has anyone done this? anyone have reccomendations on the right stuff for the job?
Bike: 2000 CBRF4 and a 1999 GSXR600
can i get a universal stand?
sites to get parts? or is ebay the way to go here?
ANY input would be awsome... thanks a lot in advance

you can get a universal stand; i have an LP one i picked up for $40 but a pitbull one is what i would get next time around. 520 is cool and all but i think it is kinda overrated for street use. i'd get another only because i have sprockets for one. other than that, you just need a chain tool to break the current chains. did chains are the way to go; i have afam sprockets but i'm sure there are many other good ones out there.
AFAM 14T countershaft sprocket (stock 15T)
AFAM 44T rear sprocket (stock 43T)
D.I.D ERV2 series 520 chain
Couldn't be happier. I don't stunt, but I do daily commute weather pending and have done a couple track days with plans to do many more.
It's not hard to do at all.

i just helped put a 520 -1/+2 setup on my buiddies 99 f4, what a differnce. it was easy too. if you want to get the clip link which he has and hasen't had any troubles with yet you don't need a chain tool, as long as you have the right size chain.
As for a universal stand, I would recommend a pair of Handy Stands. They're $99 + shipping. Get the rear stand with pads (the one with spools won't work on your F4, unless you add spools).
I use an RK chain breaking tool, which can also be used for rivet- and clip-type chains. It looks really hard in the instructions, but it's a cinch once you've tried it once.
I got all my stuff from Terra Powersports.

I don't remember about DID, but I hear that RK is about middle-of-the-road in terms of quality/price. IIRC, Regina chains are one of the best. HTH.

These things are awesome. I bought mine from http://www.handyindustries.com for $99 for the CBR pair. Yes front and rear. You can't beat that.

Vortex makes good aluminum sprockets. They are local to me so I have used them in the past. Use the riveted link do not use the clip style master link.
Trust me, from experience I know. At 2 am while coming home from work My bike lost the masterlink and threw the chain at about 80mph.
Luckily it was catapulted behind me and there was no traffic. The chain slapped my subframe putting a huge dent in it (f3 - steel subframe). After pushing my bike approx 1 mile over the bridge and calling for my dad to bring my truck I was able to get the bike home. This chain had 2-3k miles on it. It was properly adjusted and the sprockets were new. It was a did x-ring chain 530 and I was using sunstar steel oem size sprockets.
I never did find that chain as I looked on the bridge. My guess is that it was tossed into the water.
Luckily it did not lock up the rear wheel and send me airborne. I now insist on the rivited style master link. I usually just have the shop throw it on as they dont gouge me on prices.
I have the lockhart phillips stand and it is adjustable for different swingarm widths, however I have not been able to find a 929 adapter for it like you can get for the pitbull stand for this silly uneven swingarm.

so the clip master links are not as good? did you have it on backwards? thats the only time i have heard of it failing before. maybe we should change out the one on my friends bike.
I would hope that the motorcycle shop installed it correctly. To be honest I cant remember if I checked it after they installed it.
It is up to you. Personally after this experience I will only use the rivet style master link.

I've never had a chain breaking on me but I have stretched my stock one and an RK race chain (which I shouldn't have been riding on the street for long distances).
I now have an EK chain that's good 2 go so far, I want a DID next time. Also I have only had the clip style master links, I never thought about the difference between the clip and rivet. The bike is coming outta tha shop this week with more power and I wiil put this chain to the test. If I stretch it I gonna get a DID right away. Don't wanna risk damage, pain or getting caught stuntin' or speedin' this **** is addictive at times.
