Default whats the difference between 88 si tranny and 89 si tranny???

can anyone help me out i have an 89 si but my 2nd gear is grinding when i downshift, so far the only replacement tranny i have found is an 88 si tranny. are parts just as available for the 88 as they are for the 89-91. is it a downgrade. i eventually want to get a lightweight fywheel and crunk clutch. what do you think?

The number of splines on the input shaft are different between the 88 and 89. Otherwise they are the same.

you have to buy a new 88 clutch.flywheel. and i think the clutch is lil bit smaller on the 88...but other then that they should bolt right up

It is just harder to find, hence forth why my 88 transmission will bite the dust for an 89 in the coming weeks.
