Default Honda Nighthawk 250cc

I was given one as a present. It won't start, ****, it won't even turn over. Starter was good last time he checked it. =x Battery is good. He overreved the bike, so I'm guessing valves. I just pulled the motor, valves are all intact, time to check valves.

My question would be if I checked clearance, would that be enough to determine that the valves aren't bent or wouldn't need replacement? I don't want to just replace parts for the hell of it.

I also crank the motor by hand and it makes hissing noises (i'm thinking cuz of the compression phase) and it gets rather difficult to turn at points. If it's not normal, what would it be? Rods?

I'm very new to the bike scene as well as carburator scene. =x But I've been in Honda for about 4 years.

Okay, i got the bike to turn over, starts (with jumpers), idles okay, and it can go thru the gears when placed on the centerstand (wheels just moving in the air), but when placed upon a load (trying to ride on street), motor bogs and dies.

any ideas? i'm pretty much out of ideas.
