Default Head Milling?

My ITR head is getting a valve job. The machine shop said they would mill it, but didn't say how much. Is it a good idea to get the head milled since the head is already off and how much is safe to get milled?

If the head is warped then its necessary to get the head milled! Should you want to bump the compression a bit then its not a bad idea, but i dont think i would have it milled if it doesn't need to be. Your machinist should know what is safe and what is not safe when milling a head. Although i dont know for sure, others on the board will have an answer for you! To get a head pressure checked and milled could cost you anywhere from $125-200 depending on where you get it done.

Why not just go with a thinner head gasket if you want to bump your compression abit? I wouldn't get my head milled because once done its gone. But if you decide to get it milled don't go over .030.

I think I paid $30 or $40 to have the redneck machine shop do that job when I was down at school a few years ago on my 93 LS motor

Check your helms - the 'service limit' is lower than that.

take .015" off the head if you're paranoid(don't worry it'll be ok)
take .040" off the head if your name is Mike K and you don't give a ****. (take up the difference with cam gears)

.040"

Most probably already know this but for every .012" milled off you need to adjust the Cam Gears +1 on Intake and Exhaust!

i see you're in FL. lol. .040" is florida style.
i get my ***** busted here in washington for mentioning it. but in florida it was a normal thing for a guy with a gsr motor w/ itr cams to shave .040". works awesome.
