98 V-6 Accord Auto CEL and Tranny Code
Wondeirng if someone can help me out, it's my mom's car she called to tell me the check engine light was on so I checked it. Just a side note, the car has been shifting really oddly for a while now, typically banging gears etc. I just drove it for the first time in a while and the shifting issue seems to be compeltely gone, it's shiffting perfectly. Anyhow here are what the CEL and Tranny D indicators were blinking...
The CEL was 7 long blinks and then it would repeat the same 7 blinks
the Tranny D was blinking 4 blinks and then repeating.
Any Help wouldu be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

it COULD be the alternator, when the alternator on both of my friend's 6th gen v6 starting to give it, the tranny wouldn't shift to second. what's weird is that the car starts and runs perfectly fine with stereo working.
we were thinking it was the auto tranny crapping out too since it too, throws a tranny and cel. one of the accord is 98 av6 ex and the other is 00'

Alternator is fine, apparenlty 7 is a throttle position sensor, and apparenlty it's been messed up for quite some time, this has been the root cuase of the erratic shifting. I'll be ordering one on Monday.
With the check engine light on and the tranny flashing a code, it seems the car has put itself in limp mode, i.e. fixed vaules to instead of reading the faulty values from the TP sensor. Consequently the car shfts practically perfect. I really do not think it's the transmission at all.
On a side note the 98 V-6 tranny is not part of the extended warranty. Plus it's a 98 with 120,000 miles on it. I'll post back up once I get the new throttle body installed. Tried to find one at numerous junk yards but they have no 98,99 V-6 accords at all. Which I take as a good sign, means they are all still on the road.

My list is for a '98 4-cyl, so I'm not really sure what could be different...
7 long flashes of the CEL is 70, not 7.
CEL 70 is a tranny problem. That along with the tranny light flashing 40, is for the lock-up clutch not able to engage.

I'm going to say they are actually short blinks. Since there were no short vs. Long blinks to check.
The reason I say they are short is that 7 is the Throttle Position sensor. I reset the ECU and started the car, no code thrown, so I then just disconnected the TP sensor. Checked the code and it was the same 7 blinks. cleared the ECU again and hooked back up the TP Sensor. Car shifted completely erratically. Holding 1st till 4K then banging into gear, and not shifting out of 2nd. Finally the CEL came on, and then the ECU replaced the signals from the TP sensor with fixed values. The transmission shifts practically perfectly (given that it is ignoring the TP sensor)
This would explain the erratic shifting that has plauged this car, finally the TP sensor has gone bad enough that the ECU has noticed that the voltage is way off, I hooked up my voltage meter to it and monitored as you opened the throttle. it was at .5 as expected closed but as you turned the throttle it didn't increase smoothly, the values jumped up and down. Which would make perfect sense. It was worse where you foot would be for "normal" driving and better towards WOT.
So basically the tranny was shifting at the wrong time becuase it thought the driver was pushing the pedal much harder than they actually were, and therefore the shift points were all wrong and the shift quality was a bit rough.
Anyhow those are just my thought's as I'm no expert. I'm still trying to locate a used Throttle body and oddly no junk yards have ANY 98-99 V-6's in stock.

I like that better than just assuming it's bad.
Good luck finding a TB. I've heard 'most' Honda TP sensors are the same, even from different TBs. Maybe someone can verify, then you'll have a wider range of choices at the junkyard. Take a saw or dremel & cut a screwdriver slot into the 'rivets' & unscrew them.
