whats the benefit of having it knife edged?

 

lightweight

 

cuts through the gases in the crankcase better and as already said, its lightweight which helps the motor rev better kinda like a lightweight flywheel.

I believe the knife edging is to cut through the oil, not the gases and of course for weight savings.

can i replace my gsr crank with the type R crank? any gains\losses?

 

I am goin out on a limb here but I think the Type R crank is balanced a little better from the factory so that it can rev. to 8400rpm. None of that matters now that I have had it Knife edged. So the answer to your question is yes you would benefit from it because it makes it safer for you to rev your motor to high rpms.
