what to clean shocks / coilovers with?

what to clean shocks / coilovers with?

my shocks and coilovers look dirty, what is good for cleaning them? does washing them with water damage it?

i when i was my car i power wash them. and wheni have my car on a lift i whipe them down with a rag and water.
