Default Whining? d15b

Car is a 1992 civic cx which use to have the original motor and is now being run by a jdm d15b.Recently ive noticed a whining noise coming from the top of third gear and never any other gear (right in front of me in the cluster area). It gets louder as i step on the gas(not extremely loud)and then it goes away. Its funny cuz it doesnt happen everyday and the performance does not drop.Ive only had the motor for 3 months and its been nothing but good to me.I only fixed a few things and im on top of maintenance.I do mess around with the car but i never redline it and the worst thing that ive done is taken it to 6 grand which im sure is fine.Heres a few things to keep in mind

1.Oil changed every 2500 with mobil 1(my motor doesnt react wierd to this oil)
2.When i first got the car i learned how to drive stick and that clutch is now in the d15b and is fine.
3.New plugs wires(honda),new ngk plugs, new water pump, and new timing belt
4.When i first put on the si tranny there was a loud noise clanking around when i drove and it turned out to be a bearing which was replaced
5.I had idle problems but that is now fixed because i got a newer looking icav from a dx
6.Modifications are aem short ram,si exhaust system,dx exhaust mani

I baby this motor and i sure hope nothing is wrong internally if so it would really suck since ive made sure everything was perfect. One more thing timing is correct and all fluids are topped off.Oil change was done 1,000 miles ago.Plz tell me its nothing to worry about

is it a whistling sound?
you might wanna check for oil leaking from the engine's head or exhaust...

If it is a hissing sound then its prolly your short ram sucking air. Does this happen when you are just cruising at a steady speed? If so it could be your throttle valve being open just enough to cause a whistle or whining sound as air enters (very common). This can become more noticable with a short ram intake. A whining when accelerating could be a loose TB too. Since you said it was coming from behind the "cluster" I would figure it is your intake or throttle body (since the throttle is right there) Also because you said this happens at the top of third gear (throttle is close to being wide open) it is prolly the air passing through it. Does it stop when you let off the gas? If so then it is nothing to big to worry about . Need more info though .

Your timing belt can make the noise you are describing. It could be too loose or too tight?

Why it only dose it in one gear is beyond me.

Check TB tension and do a air leak test at idle and 3000rpm. It could still be from when your close to WOT and cause a whining. If it is coming from the driverside like you think, then your TB could be lose (since it is right there). If it was coming from the other side, I would suggest it is the tranny but it isn't so TB or intake. Just take the cover of and check the tension. Sounds like loose TB to me. Good Luck

I'm guessing tranny synchros since it only happens in 3rd.

He does make a good point. I would first check TB tension though. If the sound was coming from the passenger side then I would suggest gear synchros. Put some synchromesh in there and see if it stops. Are you positive it is coming from the driver side?

Get synchromesh and put it in there. Changing the MTF may only stop it for a little while at the most. Hope you find what it is. Good Luck

I'm gonna have to agree with it being the intake. My intake makes a whistle noise when its in the higher RPMs 3rd gear in my car, but its an auto. The intake also makes a BOV kinda noise if you let off really fast from a high RPM at WOT. Hope this is of some help.

This is due to the fact that 3rd gear is geared longer. With my manny, if i let of the gas it sound like a "psshh" (like I got a turbo or somthing) and whistles a lot when on the gas or off really quickly. If I gear down it whistles a really long time as the car slows down. That's AEM for ya!

I'm going to agree with the guy who says your timing belt. you said it soundsl ike it's right in front of you (which the timing belt is) and I've heard if you tighten down or have a timing belt too small it will whine. check it out before you take it to a mechanic where they'll charge you up the ***.

I think the same thing but he/she who ever says that their mechanic will tell him/her what it is without charging.
