Default transmission swap

i have a 90 civic std with a 4 spd manual. my trans is going out and i want to swap it for a 5 spd. my question is can i use any of the 88-91 civic(2 or 4 door)/crx transmissions? can i use my already bought d15b1 clutch kit? how about my axles, do i have to get different ones. also, my flywheel, do i need to change that. the transmission i can get for free is out of a 90 4 door 1.5

you can do the swap pretty easy. you should be able to use that clutch kit as long as it's not for an 88'. you can also use your current axles and flywheel.

You can keep the axles, they will fit into a lot of transmissions. It is a different story if you upgrade your brakes, but you aren't doing that so you don't have to worry about that.

You can use any transmission from any '89-'91 crx/civic/4dr. '88 trannys are weird, DON'T use them. If you do use them, you have to use a '88 flywheel and clutch. So I suggest using any '89 to '91 tranny and, yes, you can keep your bought clutch and flyhweel if you get an '89 to '91 tranny.

If you swap the tranny yourself, you just got a new tranny into your car for free. Thats awesome.

Hi Guys,

After a got my mechenic to do a standard transmission swap for my 97 EL, the engine check light is on all the time.

He said that the only way round it is to replace the ECU with one for a standard car, and it will be at least $250.

Can you guys think of a cheaper way round the problem. I don't want to render the engine check light useless.

Thanks!

You are in the wrong forum.

Anyway, see what code it is first and then go on from there.

why the wrong forum? isn't the topic trans swap?

The check light only came on after the swap.

The codes (6 of them) were all trans related, basically because the auto trans is missing.

any suggestions?

This is the pre-92 civic/crx forum. You have a 97 EL....get the picture. Most guys in here are not too familiar with them.

Wrong forum.... But its an easy fix. Just get the manual ecu for that same model car. Should be ~$100 on ebay.
