Default Sohc ZC vs. Dohc ZC - which is better?

The motor in my 89 CRX DX needs new rings, so I've been thinking since ZC motors are so cheap, I'd just replace it with a ZC. I was looking on HMO and I noticed that there is only a 9 hp difference between the two, but the Dohc motor costs about $130 more.

This is probably a dumb question, but what is the difference between the two? I know alot of people swap in the Dohc, but I'm just looking for something a little more peppy than the motor in my car now.

Thanks for the help

I used to have the dohc zc in my old 88 hatch, it was pretty quick for what it was. The dohc is going to be alot harder to find aftermarket parts for, while the sohc will be campatible with most sohc aftermarket parts. The 9 hp's are'nt worth the headache of searching for those parts.

You already know the hp difference. They both bolt in the same.
Sounds like your biggest concern is cost...while the sohc is slightly cheaper, where else are you going to get 10 real hp for $130?

True yes, but the sohc option has a much larger aftermarket background because of its compatability with almost all other sohc parts. So if you're not going to mod it much at all then go with the dual, if you're looking at what you can do with the engine then go with the single. Oh, I almost forgot, you can also do a VTEC head swap onto the sohc.

Things are little diffrent in Europe. But i'd definatley go for Dohc. 15hp has a diffrence. And at least then when you consern to tune it up. Its hard to say because im european. But id go for 2 cams...

There is actually a big aftermarket for the Dohc and it can be tuned more than the single cam.

The dohc zc has plenty of part available for it. Exhaust manifolds from the sohc bolt on but need a little porting. There are cams available. Intakes are the same as sohc..etc

The proper hp rating for those engines are:

sohc 118hp
dohc 130hp

The single cam do to slightly lighter weight is actually about the same speed as the twin cam version. I used to have a dohc in my car years ago, it worked pretty good, but they sure are a lot more rare these days.

Man I had the same thoughts. I am so happy with my dohc zc, ive had thoughts of swapping it out etc., but now im gonna just boost it. You wont be dissapointed with the dohc zc. Think of it like a b16 without vtec and a nice powerband

i saw that the sohc is the best bet. its smaller in size witht he same displacment. you can swap on a sohc vtec head for a nice top end. sohc parts are a lot easier to find alother there is a market for the dohc zc its not as good as sohc. if i were you and didnt want to do a lot of work i would put in the jdm d15b sohc vtec engine. hmo has it for about the same price.

i myself have been thinking about building either a d16a6 or d16a6/d16y8 mini me. if anyone has a good write up on either give it to me please.

Most of the SOHC parts are compatible with the DOHC. Actually the DOHC ZC can accept some B-series parts with the right know how. A fairly popular thing to do is swap out the B18 Valve train and put them into the DOHC ZC head. Check out http://www.thezcr.com for more info.

ive ran a stock a6, a dohc zc,dohc zc turbo, and now im running an a6 block/z6 head and the best motor out there in my opinion would be the a6. my brothers dx motor with just mpfi was beating my zc. id shoot for a sohc zc. cheaper and more possibilities. plus if ur a junkyard man running sohc motors is 10 times cheaper.

Thanks for the replies, I think I'm gonna go with the sohc ZC. I'm basically looking for a replacement motor for my daily driver, so I'm not gonna mod it besides maybe some bolt-ons like a header and CAI.

I have the sohc zc and it hauls ***. Its a super clean swap as far as axles and everything go. It has tons of low end all the way to the top. Definitely go sohc.

I think the developers concentrated to the 1.6 Dohc more than to 1.6 Sohc. Ofcourse, it was the creme of the crop.

Remember the diffrence in valvetrain, cylinder- head, channels, ingnition and a lot of other things what makes the obvius advantage.

Yeah but its still better than a motor that makes less power. He has the DX motor. This will be a nice jump in power for him.
