junkyard ?'s
ok, this week in going to the junkyard to pick up any d series motor. running or not. My project is it dissemmble and assemble for my auto shop class. how much would you expect to pay? dosent have to be running or anything. just a complete motor. and when you go to the junkyards how to you get/lift the motor out.
Thnaks a lot, this is for school and i dont want to get ripped on price. i just thought before i get my own car to work on i would know how it really works hands on.
also is you buy a engine stand, do all of them work for every motor?

thanks, and how many guys would it take to pull out a D series? i know these arn't the biggest things in the world, i just want to be prepared
it kinda depends. If it doesn't have to be taken out very neatly you might consider going out the bottom
Disconnect everything and jack the car up kinda high. then pull the pins on the engine mounts and let it fall (thats what i did with my blown d16a6)
then slide it out from under there and i'm pretty sure you and a friend could carry it. Or sometimes a junk yard will have a wheel barrel

ive never taken out a motor from the junkyard, but you can rent an A frame to help lift the engine out. but you may not need to use it. just remove the tranny, and two ppl and pick up the engine itself.
the cars in a junkyard will be on pretty high stands anyway, so dont bother with the "jacking" advice.
i think an engine will cost around $150 from the picknpull.

It took me my brother and k20 to get my d-series out. No engine hoist. Just a large bar and twisting the motor around.

so you would reccomend picking up the car, and let the motor drop then to pull it out? also the motor mounts, there pins not sockets? what tools to i need for this?
also to Ronion150, what about if its me and my pops, were no lightweights, but is a 3ed person nessary?
and to tyson, is this a true-tested cost or just a guesstimate? its cool either way
thanks guys, next week is spring break for me so im just getting prepped for hopefully an fun/educational project

you are gonna need a socket set (deep and regualr) a wrench set. I'm letting you know that through the bottom is pretty much only a good choice if you don't have an engine hoist. But i'm sure its designed to go through the top.
As for the price. My local yard wants $100 for a self pulled engine. You might also want to look at local shops that do swaps on hondas. they just throw those blown engines out most of the time. Maybe you could get one for free

ive asked how much for a complete engine 4cyl honda d16a6 before ,and was told $150. i didnt bother at the time. you can also just pay for the bottom end.
its hard ot say what they quote you at the junkyard. it kind of depends on the cashiers interpretation of what is included.

you might have to pull an axle off the driver side to get the engine to drop more easily, and that will not be easy by any means heh.. but you will probably have to drop the tranny a bit to get the spline thing out of the flywheel/clutch... so make sure you have a good breaker bar and whatever extenstion you can fit around it (pipe/header from another car
) and if you have to get the axles out you'll need a 32mm socket for the nuts

so from what im hearing, i also need a 32 mm socket and dropping the motor out the bottom is the best way to go? how will i lift the car? with a jack or something elese? thanks a lot im getting a lot of good info for my school project
Like someone said earlier most junkyards have them propped up on some sort of stands . The local one I have been to had some cars on cinder blocks or stacked steelies laying sideways.

yeah me and my skinny *** friend could lift my old mini me.. I lifted my old HF motor for a minute by myself..
I would definitely bring all the metric sockets/wrenches you have (especially 10, 12, 14, 17, 19, 32), breaker bars, pb blaster, wire snips, screwdrivers, pry bar.... it's really not that hard, just drain the fluids, take things off 1 by 1 that are in your way/keeping the motor in there, then yank the motor (chain hook goes onto a bolt in a hole in the head... make sense?) most yard by me have a giant cherry picker on wheels for these kinds of things.
As for the engine stand, yeah I think they all are the same. Get the same kind of bolts that hold your transmission to your block, but a bit longer that's what you'll use.
And if you're anywhere near Sacramento, CA you can have my old HF motor..... get it out of here.
But yeah, it should be fun. Give yourself some time to do it and take a few meal breaks.

price varies depending on where your located and the junkyard, on average at my yard its 135 for a longblock, bare bare longblock tho, no starter, no dist, no alternator.
Your going to need a ton of sockets, a breaker bar and dont forget your axle nut socket. Pribars would rock to pull the axles out. As far as pulling the engine, a couple yards will have a huge fork lift that you can ask for them to help you either pull the motor out or you could just unbolt everything, let the motor drop and then have them lift the car over it, throw a ton of tires on the car and your set.

Thinking the same thing, just save yourself the headache, in the long run it will be better to buy it from someone used. If you lived closer I could sell you a d series engine for pretty cheap.
That's just my opinion, I would never buy one from the junkyard.
