Default What did you spend on your OBD1 ECU?

I'm looking into the whole conversion to OBD1 from OBD2a and I was curious what everyone paid for theirs? And just a refresher. I need the harness from boomslang, the ecu, then I was going to buy a Spoon Sports chip for it. Then for Uberedata I need a USB cable, the program, blank chip, and chip burner. I'm a lil confused on the whole USB cable but you still need a chip burner? Oh yea, can you keep reburning on the same chip? Thanks! BTW, my Dad and I have been reading and searching for over and hour so please no "Use the search newb!" because I did along with other sites and reading. We have the idea and just need to clarify it all before we purchase anything. One last thing, the OBD1 ECU; I have a 98 civic ex m/t so that means I need a 92-95 OBD1 ECU that came off a VTEC and m/t car? Am I right? Are those what the p28, p30, p06 serial codes mean? Different ECUs for different models? Thanks everyone!

about 120 on a chip programmer for ebay, and a friend gave me a chip for free.

just asking why you want to do all this? do you have a swap or boost? if you just have stock motor then you are wasting money.
p28 = sohc vtec.
p30 = dohc vtec b16.
p06 = sohc non vtec.

Thanks for the little conversion chart. I'm planning on boost later on so this is just a start. One thing at a time. The whole ECU and electronic and tuning is IMO going to be the hardest part for my Dad and I. The engine work shouldn't be to bad. I want to Uberdata and try and get myself aquainted with the program first.

One quick question about Uberdata though. What about the USB cable? What does that serve as? Datalogging? And why do you need a chip burner when there is a USB cable soldered to the board? Can you reburn the same chip? Thanks everyone!

I paid about 180.

60 for the oBDII - OBDI harness
120 for a uberdata chipped P28

The USB cable that you wire to the ECU is for datalogging. Go to any Radioshack and get a cable for a Kyocera SE47 or any of the others in their oval blue & yellow colored packages made by Future Dial. Ask the guy at the counter if you can open it up to check the chip inside (bring a tiny flathead screwdriver). There should be a PL-2303 or PL-2303hx chip inside. Search for the drivers for Prolific PL-2303 or PL-2303HX (they are different for the two) and install. Wire it up as per the radioshack cable described on the Uberdata forums. Just remember that you need to open the stock rom up correctly and save it for datalogging to work.

Another thing to note, moates.net has a USB chip burner for $85 (BURN1), that's what I got and I love it. You can also get a serial burner that also has to be connected to USB (*only* for it's power) off of ebay for $50, but its bulky and ugly - but can burn many more chip types (if you're into other electronics ).

As for the chips, the AT29C256 chip at moates.net is $6 and is a FLASHROM, meaning if can be rewritten over 100,000 times (probably past the 1mil stated for most flashroms) - if you push that limit, get someone to help you tune . It's a good idea to have 2-4 chips, one for a friend, one in case one is smashed/lost, and two for tuning. I like to burn two different maps, one using the EzFuel.xls suggested values (from uberdata forum), one a bit richer just in case. Not really needed since I have a lappy, but for $6? Why not?

To answer you question, my ecu came with my swap, and I spent about $200 on 10 chips, 5 chip installation combos, a few non-zif sockets, and a USB burner. I also add $400 to the cost for the used lappy I got as well as $300 for the wideband o2 sensor I got for tuning.
