G2 running problem-rpm's out of control!(kind of long)
Do want to take a shot at explaining this problem?
Here's the whole tale:
Chapter 1
Within the past 2 months, my car has been hard to start. The colder the outside temperature is, the harder it is to start. The worst times are when I first go out to my car in the early mornings or even sometimes when I'm leaving work. I'll turn the key to "run" and the dash lights up like normal. I turn the key to "start" and nothing happens. If I now leave the key in the "run" position for 5-10 seconds, and then try to start it again, it starts. The colder it is, the longer I have to wait until it will start. It never has taken more than 30 seconds. These symptoms have been pretty consistent for about 2 months.
Chapter 2
Now Thursday morning I went out to the car to leave for work. I turn the key to "run" and let it sit for a few seconds. It doesn't start. So I let the key sit at "run" for about 20 seconds. Still nothing. 20 more seconds and when I try this time, the engine turns but doesn't catch. This is different than it has been before. after a few more tries, I decide to look under the hood. I open my door and just on a whim I try to start it again, and it starts. It runs a little rough at first then eventually smooths out. I drive to work like normal. It doesn't have a problem starting after work.
I get home from work and get under the hood to check things out. Obviously this problem is progressing and it must stop! I remove the intake hose between the filter and throttle body and disconnect the negative side of the battery. I disconnect the starter's electrical connections, clean the contact surfaces, and reconnect. I remove the distributor cap to inspect it and the rotor. Looks fine. I tighten the screws on the coil then reattach the cap and wires. I reassemble the rest. I start the car and rev it. It seems totally fine. I won't know if I fixed anything until the next morning when the car will be cold.
Chapter 3
About an hour later I leave for band practice( a 30 mile drive). I gas up and then get on the entrance ramp to K10 west off Ridgeview. I'm accelerating "briskly"...taking each gear to about 5500+rpm. As I'm about to shift out of second, the car lurches, and as I push in the clutch, the rpm's zip up immediately to 7000 and that's where they stay, bouncing off the rev limiter!!! My foot is not touching the gas pedal. I immediately turn the car off and coast onto the shoulder of the entrance ramp. I check the throttle body first...the plate has stuck wide open...the cable from the gas pedal is totally slack. There is nothing obviously holding the plate open. I apply slight pressure to it and it pops back into place, so that the throttle cable is now appropriately tight again. WEIRD. I get back in the car and continue onto the highway. Everything seems ok.
15 minutes later I'm in DeSoto, accelerating from a stop sign. As the rpms approach 4000, I feel that lurch again and the rpm's soar. I turn the car off before they can even get to 7000. I check the plate again and it looks fine...it must not have had a chance to get stuck.
5 minutes later I'm waiting at a railroad crossing for a train to pass. Everything's cooool. We start to go, and as soon as I ease out the clutch for first gear, the rpm's go insane again!!! I turn the blinker's on and check the plate again. I wiggle it and check for loose vacuum lines, etc. It all seems very normal. I arrive at our drummer's house without further incident.
Leaving band practice, I drive very gently, not taking the rpm's too high. When I get to the entrance ramp back onto K10, the rpm's go out of control again, but this time I stab the gas pedal to the floor and release: the rpm's come back down. NOW, the engine begins to "chug." It is not running smoothly. Once I get cruising on the highway, it's fine. But going up hills or accelerating, it misses. I exit on Ridgeview and decide to experiment. I rev the car to 5000+ rpm's. Normal response. I get going and take every gear to 5500+ rpm
's up to 4th gear. Everything's good. I didn't notice the chug so much when giving it lots of gas. Back to normal driving and the chug is still there. I get home without further incident.
Chapter 4
This morning I go out to my car and I lube the throttle plate and reset the ECU and check all hoses and connections. When's it's fully warm I start off to work. The chug is definitely still there. It's most noticeable in speeds above 10 mph. There are no further incidents other than the contant chugging.
THE END!
What do you think?
Here are my theories:
-bad fuel pump, pressure regulator
-bad ECU
-bad O2 sensor
-broken thottle return springs
-????
