So your are saying that if you do not drive the engine past 4500 rpms it shifts fine but if the engine spped goes over 4500 that it will not go into gear or it grinds...
that would be an internal transmission problem my friend...Now if t will not rev past 4500 rpms that could be distributor or ecu related.

if its a rev limiter, check for codes on the ecu. is there a check engine light?? If the motor is running in safe mode, do to some sensor being messed up, it could cause it to have a very low rev limiter, and possibly it would also cause it to run rich.

hmm that sounds like problem I had one time for a very short period (about 2 hours) the check engine light came on though and I got an error code 10 and the ecu made the revs limit to about 4k it turned out to just be a loose connection on my intake air temp sensor.

If you are swapping it then who cares but if its the daily driver then 700 bills. Because what ever is wrong you have to fix
