H23 Removal Question
EDIT:: New question at the bottom!
Hey all, i'm working on getting my H23 out of my 92 Si and i just have a question.
I'd like to maintain my H23 transmission when swapping in the H22 so i was wondering:
When removing the motor is, it smarter to just remove the transmission with the block and separate them outside of the car?
OR
Is it just as simple to leave the transmission mounted, put a jack under it and unbolt it from the block while in the bay? (i just know i'm going to have one hell of a time getting that driveshaft out so im trying to bypass the potential disaster..
)
any help would be great. thanks!

Pull every thing out at the same time. It will make things A LOT easier. Plus, you can clean the engine area more throughly. It's easy to get the motor set out with the tranny attached anyway and it should be less time to do so.
yupp...leave the trans attached, its almost impossible to seperate the trans while everything is still in the car.
then, make sure you attach the h23 trans to the new motor before re-swapping in...it will be easier for the same reasons as before...
goodluck!

BUMP for another question of mine, two actually:
1) When removing the lower ball joint of the front suspension, is there any other method aside from using the "Special Tool" outlined in the service manual? If so, do tell.. pics?
2) When removing the driveshaft, since i've only seen this done once, should it just slide out after some coaxing with a large flathead screwdriver? or is there a sound method i should be made aware of?
thanks again!

My ball joint was stuck so I had to put the ball joint separator tool in the joint....then I put a jack under the tool while the car was jacked in the air. I then lowered the car using the jack holding the car up. It put pressure on the separator tool....and the weight of the car eventually popped the joint apart. It's hard to explain....but it worked.
Do NOT pry out the metal ring that covers the point where the intermediate shaft inserts into the tranny. It bends VERY easily!! Be gentle when take this metal disk out. Pry it out evently and with light pressure. Getting the intermediate shaft out from there shouldn't be too bad. Mine popped out when I pulled on it.

Pickle Fork for the Balljoint. Cheap Tool, Napa should have it.
And pound that CV shaft outa there. Get a nice big hammer and hit it like a son-bitch....if your a sally and your afraid to muchroom the shaft and splines then put a good sized punch in the indent and whack away. Or you can pull it outa the tranny and just hold the strut back when you drop the engine.

Yes, for sure, but get the heavy duty puller, I bought the $5 one at first thinking it would work but I bent it to hell just trying o get a lower ball joint apart. The heavy duty one took 2 seconds

aght sounds very good boys, now i just need to find someone with an engine hoist.
my thoughts.. (if the return policy allows) buy the hoist outright from an auto place then returning it a few days later..?

I found it easier removing the axles from the tranny w/o disconnecting the ball joints.
You can do it either way though. See this thread

Actually, you don't even have to undo the balljoint.
take a look at this picture.
Just remove the stabelizer link nut #27
And remove #22 (shock absorber fork bolt) and #23 (radius rod bolt).
Turn the wheel and you should be able to push out on the suspension enough
for the axle to disconnect from the tranny.

I learned this from Tom (Prelittlelude) and it helped a ton.

instead of just pounding on the axle, try taking a big flathead screwdriver and sticking it between the axle to pry it. Then pop the handle of it w/ a hammer. Rotate the axle slightly, and whack it a few times again. Keep doing this.
You will be trying to get the C-clip holding the axle in to the point where the gap is so it will just pop out.

Yea on the driver side i have had the flathead wedged in between the driver side shaft and the intermediate shaft and tapping it with the hammer.
Ive gotten it out about a quarter of an inch but thats about all its willing to move.
Guess i need to find out where that c-clip is hiding. Pics anyone?
(i know i sound like a retard- i'm just making sure i dont incur any unnecessary replacement costs)

hey hey thats me !! lol i was just gonna say isn't that the little trick i showed you. works like a charm.
i jsut do it this way because i HATE working with ball joints. hell i remember the last time i pulled my motor i never even took the wheels off the car, itjust gave me something more to pull on to swing the axle away
and to answer the question, pull everything at once, it will save you alot of agrivation
edit: if you have already got the axle to start to move outward then the c clip has a lready poped out of its resting place/grove that it sits in. now just brake the suspention lose and with you feet push on the wheel to swing the suspension out alittle to give the axle more room to keep coming out, so push with the feet and pry with hands on screw driver.
ALSO make sure you aready drained the manual tranny fluid or its all going to come out on you and the floor
