Default Cracked B20B sleeves...

I thought it would not happen to me with a this pretty low compression (12,0:1) and I have seen others here on HT run 85 mm on stock sleeves. Well the story is a buddy and me was about to mount my new RLZ stage3 head and I said to him for fun "check the sleeves". Well sleeve 2,3,4 is are cracked so I understand my high oil consumption now. I had thought about doing a leak down but never got around to it.

Well it's not all bad... I will get some Darton sleeves and be able to run higher compression and 9500 RPM but I'm sat back a month.

Some pics from the day....

My good buddy Ronnie... yes it's a real EG6 in the backgound

So the boost killar setup gonna be:

B20B3 block with Darton sleeves at 85 mm.
IB Spec Wiseco 12.8:1 pistons
Probe Ultra Light rods
RPM Service 72 mm. TB
IB Spec IM
3" short ram with velocity stack
RLZ Stage3 B16A head
IB Spec cams
IB Spec valvetrain
IB Spec valves
SMSP B20VTEC header
3" Carsound cat
3" Thermal cat back
ACT 6 puck clutch
7 lbs CM flywheel
Hondata S200

Stock B20 sleeves really do suck. Good luck with the new sleeves

Sorry to hear that, but I saw this one coming when you first posted your setup months ago. Anything over 11:1 has proven questionable on stock B20 sleeves... g'luck with your new setup

Hmm ok but what about Suprdave ( https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1082571 ) running 84,5 mm. and 13+ compression, DEVIOUS_EG* also at 85 mm. stock sleeves and 12.5:1? I might have had bad luck but cracking 3 sleeves are just crazy. The good thing is I was making good power even with this block, so I can hope for some good numbers when I'm done.

Good luck with your projects as well

yeah, there are always exceptions, but how long did those motors last? I would hate to drive around with my fingers crossed, hoping my sleeves stay in one piece. I've seen too many pictures of crack sleeves to go down that road.

But I guess it's all a learning process, and as long as you have fun doing it, and have the money to blow, why not...

You must have been running lean and detonating here and there. Never seen someone crack 3 sleeves in their B20 before throwing a rod or bearing first.

anybody ever thought of using "block filler" in a b20 block?

Well I did not have the same know how 3 years ago when I started doing this build up. Yes it's a learning process and if I would have started doing it now, it would have been sleeved from the start.

The only detonation I have had was 100 km from me to the dyno after I broke the engine in. My timing was off and got adjusted plus the B20 program I used sucked so I drove 100 km at light thr. I have the feeling it happened there but it's strange if I have driven 10000 miles with 3 sleeves cracked and 8000 RPM often without anything happening. Right now I'm just glad we found out of it in time. Btw. the AF was tuned to 12.5:1 so I have not been running lean.

af 12.5:1 ?? You can put it at 13:1 and you are still on the safe side. To rich is not healthy either. Any way many good lucks and looking forward to your new numbers and see you at KOE.

Do you think a Vtec B20B will last and be reliable if the pistons were left stock?

I honestly think the newer 99-00 blocks have better/stronger casting hence why the upped the compression to 9.6.

I've purchaced both 96-98 and 99-00 and looking at the newer ones, seems like they improved the block quality.

Regardless, highest comp b20vtec ive built was 12.3:1 on California (91 octane) pump gas.

Motor has over 50k miles on it and runs fine to this day (no oil burning)

I did a full build on my b20/vtec almost 5 years ago, and it was running 11.0:1 comp pistons, and I had a lot of oil consumption, and blue smoke. It still dyno'd @ 190whp 140 tq with the cracked sleeves! I always thought the burning was from oil recirculation, and wanted to get the block breather setup from Endyn. I was running the PCV off of the front of the valve cover were it is baffled. But after I tore it down found the source!! 3 cracked sleeves It put small notches in the side of my pistons also!!!

I would go with Benson sleeves. Dan is "THE MAN"!!!

Yeah I had the exact same thoughts... I was making good numbers and they have not changed the 15k km I have been running it, so the sleeves have surely been cracked under break in. I have also bought the Endyn breather kit now and will add a OEM oil cooler on it too.

Btw. I live in Denmark so I have 4 bare sleeves on the way... I found a really cool mashine shop who have build engines for the EU Top Fuel record holder, so I'm in good hands
The parts will come in friday so I should be running again in two weeks.

The block is at the mashine shop right now to get the sleeves installed and bored. I got some 3.6 CC instead because I only have 93 octane here. Compression will be around 12.3:1.

208 Hp and 162 lbs/ft with stock head, cams, IM and TB.

No I had the rev. limit at 8000... it was peaking at 7100 RPM.
