Well he's right, the JDM B16 has 10 more HP than a B17.
Thats if you can find a B17.

the b17 prices are not based on performance, thay are based on rarity.
If you can find one, great, but unless you actually have a GSR DA, its better to go with a JDM b16a or a newer b18c1.

I can't say that I've ever seen one go for that cheap. In fact the cheapest one I've ever seen went for $1800. Note that the B17 tranny is highly sought after due to having even closer gear ratios than a B16 tranny, and the rotating assembly can easily be put in a B16A block with the B16 pistons to yield a high compression stroker motor. The head is just like any other B16 head and can fetch the same price with ease. I've seen people piece together swaps for around $1600, but I've never seen a complete one go for less than $1800.

I realize that the stock HP figures for the 2nd gen JDM B16a is higher but that is due to a slightly raised compression ratio, revised ECU programming, and slightly improved cam shafts.
My gripe is with the statment that, "B16 has more potential."
If he's looking at buying a B17a or B16a to rebuild, there's no way the B16a would be a better choice. The only thing the B17a doesn't have support for are connecting rods. Everything else from a B16/B17/B18 fit including cams, pistons, gaskets, etc, etc.

Trying to protect your investments huh?? understandable, however I HAVE seen a complete go for much less than $1800

No, I've never bought/sold one before.

Well, just pin a rose on your nose.
I'm not saying they haven't gone for much less than $1800. I'm making a statement based on what I have observed. Just because a couple of swaps sell for a particularly low price, doesn't mean that everyone is going to be willing to sell at that price. Usually the people selling at the lowest prices either don't know what they have, or are trying to sell something that's problematic/broken. The average market price I've seen complete B17 swaps go for is about $2000.

The B17 and B16 are nearly the exact same engine. When looking for aftermarket parts you can use anything B16 except for piston rods and other obvious things. The B17 is just a stroked B16.
