Although tire pressure does play a part in traction, driving skill is a greater factor. You need to modulate the gas and not just peg it to the floor board. I easily got 2.4 on 215-35-18 Spec-2's. Mind you, this was with no LSD. You should be able to get 2.2's or 2.3's on 16's with no problem. I would run tire pressure in the mid 20's. You don't want to run too low of a pressure or the center of the tire will bow in. Try playing with tire pressure at home in your driveway. Adjust tire pressure and run your car through a patch of water. Look at the contact patch after leaving the water. You'll know for sure if the tire is bowing.

I drove an identical car as yours, 97' DX coupe, ITR swap, I/H/E on 205 BFG drag radials and went 13.93 @ 97mph with a 2.1 60'. Lower tire pressure gives you more bite at the launch pad and reduces wheelhop but it also slightly reduces your trap speed and high gear stability. On street tires, I would do about an even 20psi. Buy some 215/60/14's BFG drag radials for those 14's wheels and you'll be good to go.

2.16 60ft with steelie 13's with cheap tires at 15 psi!

1.78 60ft with steelie 14's with MT 20x6x14 at 12 psi!
