Default 98 V6 Coolant loss. HELP!!!

My buddy has a 98 Accord V6 and hes is losing coolant. Its not leaking out, and there is no visible smoke from the tail pipe. He says the temp gauge is bouncing around too. What could it be? Thermostat? Head Gasket? Anyone experience this in their V6 before?

I have not experienced that but It could be a number of things. Has he looked for leaks? Also how many miles are on the car?

I guess it could be burning it up but I don't see how. I would suggest changing the thermostat and flushing the system. His heater core is not leaking is it?

There is a coolant pipe that goes under the manifold that I've seen leak a few times. When it does leak it very seldom leaks fast enough to leave a puddle and the coolant will usually just evaporate and leave a green residue.
