No , sometimes when you advance it all the way your car will experiece detonation. Mine did this at high rpms during vtec

and sometimes even if you dont get detonation you will gain some low end but sacrifice top end, either set it to factory spec, or get it dynoed

dont be fooled by thinking advancing the timming will make power i just dynoed my car at modacar and advancing the timing didnt make power but by the advice of Casey we started to to take timing and i made power.

I can't tell you how to find out what it should be, but the maximum pressure in the combustion chamber should occur 14° after top dead center. PM me if you'd like me to post some links about this.
