Default Tires: old vs. new

Okay, I know this topic has been done to death of late w/ Mike's Azeni and Ceas' ??, but I pose a revised question.

Everyone always says too bad the RE71 and AVS-i's are gone - since you can't get them get... What if you had the magical size and could get RE71's, AVS-i's, Kumho 712's, or Azeniseses all for w/n about $10 a tire difference? What if you intended to autox some in the summer and do occasional track days, but didn't use the car for commuting (Metro)? Such is my dilemma

Can anyone whose had the old and the new compare? Good old days or just old junk? (next on Geraldo...) Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I would get either the RE71s or the Azenis.

RE71, AVSi, and the Falkens will grip better than the 712. The falken's will have a wider footprint and they seem to be all the rage - i think it would be tight if you mounted some falken's on some bling! bling! wheels...

umm thanks, sorta? No bling, bling wheels - just factory 16x6.5 alloys and I'm not much interested in raging. The 712's are the wet weather loving underdog (for a RWD car that is dying to catch me off guard and spin).

What I was really hoping for was someone who had the Azenis now b/c they couldn't get the RE71 or AVSi anymore to compare and say that they would either rather go back to the old or that would rather embrace the new.

The RE-71 and AVS-I will equal the 712's wet grip when new, but they're foul-weather traction diminishes rather quickly.

Having gone through 8 RE-71s and 8 AVS-Is, I say RE-71s hands-down for your application. Their biggest drawback is that they wear very quickly.
