What is wrong with my DOHC ZC?
I ticks loudly. now, the mechanic said he "checked" them, and said its better for them to be loose, than tight. (girls are opposite).
He also said its normal for these engines to be ticking loudly. I hope its not my lifters, engine only has 40k-60k on it.
Shall I get them rechecked by someone else? The engine has sat around for many years.

Mine clicks to, I had the valves adjusted but it didnt make a difference, seems to be louder when cold them warm "probably" cause the engine is not lubricated with oil when it starts up"
My zc valves clicked pretty loudly after the swap. I had them adjusted and they quieted a bit, but were still loud. On the other hand my neighbors zc is quiet and he has almost no valvetrain noise. I would try to have them adjusted again. Just a thought.
hehe.. i used to have a zc.. blew the rod bearings.. that happend with me too.. it was clikcing hella loud.. adjusted the valves and the day later i blew the rod bearings... but gotta run.. late
Well then!! You gotta remember that the redline is 7200 not 9500rpm
Mine is almost silent. I've heard some that sound like a diesel motor. I've never adjusted mine, and I'd guess the motor has about 100,000 on it. What makes you say the motor only has 40,000 to 60,000? Don't go by that "our motors have about 30,000 miles" crap that all of the importers say. It's not true. I think they just average new and old motors. My ZC had at least 75,000 when I got it. I'm going by clutch and timing belt wear.
Anyway, unless its gotten worse or sounds exceptionally bad, I'd let it go. I personnally have checked the valves on numerous honda engines all with well over 100,000 miles and have only ever found one valve that was at the farthest spec still considered acceptable. Every other valve has been perfectly in the middle of the specs. Maybe I'm lucky, but Honda engines don't seem to need valve adjustment very often if ever.

naww not all ZC are bunck! some are just more tired than others. you guys forget these motors are used an more than 10yrs old. c'mon now! i know for a fact i got a good ZC and mine ticks...slightly. it runs like it always has even though i am throwing a code 9 and 1. but it does sound like valves. have them readjusted. i've heard of instamces where these actually come loose, don't ask me how. but they do.

I had to assume my engine only had 40k-60k on it cause of the original spark plugs, original wires, original timing belt, water pump etc ALL IN GREAT SHAPE, although I did replace them all.
Headers, I just found out, make the ticking louder cause of the valves. Its not really loud, but annoying. My old Si d16 ran smoother. Oh well.
BTW ZC'S ARE NOT BUNK, CUTIE
Thanks everyone for being so helpful here.
