Default what autocross class?? '88 crx si

i am going to start autocrossing this season and would like to know what class a stock 1988 honda crx si would fall into?? i am looking to run the stock class, and in doing so would also like to know what modifications are allowed...non adjustable aftermarket shocks? engine mods? tires? springs? polyurethane bushings? any help that anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated, thanks

They changed the grouping for cars this year so I'm guessing DS or GS.

You can do:
aftermarket shocks - same height as stock
DOT racing tires on stock sized wheels within 1/4" offset
spark plugs
spark plug wires
brake pads
brake rotors same as stock
4 or 5 point harness
K&N filter replacement for OEM
Cat back exhaust
front sway bar
roll cage (approved by SCCA)
harness bar

And that's it.

I'm pretty sure it's GS now and it should do very well in there I think.

no polyurethane bushings? and as far as the intake goes, can i remove the air silencers and whatnot from the engine compartment? short shifter? and is it alright to gut the interior of the car or remove the a/c system? only stock clutches allowed? i really appreciate any additional comments that can be offered

No bushings
You can only change the Intake filter, no mods to the piping!!
No short shift
No removal of any interior pieces!!
AC must remain!!!
Stock Clutch Only.

Basically the car must remain Stock!!!

The only mods you can do are listed in the post above. If it is not listed, you can't do it.

Actually, if the car could be ordered without A/C, he can remove it. I believe that A/C has almost always been a dealer-installed option in Hondas, so he can probably remove the A/C.

thanks very much for the response, i am almost glad that i can't really do anything to the car to keep the costs down, especially since i picked up a '88 crx si last night for $900, looks like after a set of tires, a little brake work and some shocks i am going to have a nice little racer for not much money at all, as far as the brakes go i can use any aftermarket pads and slotted rotors if i so choose?

You can change pads and fluid. No slotted rotors, which are worthless anyways.

Ok, one more time... CivicSiRacer posted a short list of whats allowed - and thats it. If its not on that list of things to do then you cant do it. I would recommend picking up a solo2 rulebook from scca.org, that will answer all the questions you have - I think he may have forgotten to add that you can modify the front sway bar (which includes fromt sway bar bushings/end links) and you can add a harness bar (provided it serves no stuctural re-inforcement) and a bolt-in roll bar (which is a trade off between weight and stiffness). If your car is a '91 or older, you can replace the brake lines with SS units. I would recommend finding a light set of wheels (in stock size and within .25" - or 6mm) of stock offset and kuhmo v700's, and some koni shocks, and carbotech kelate metallic brake pads and getting the alignment spec'ed (which is free, but you cant use any grinding or slotting, and can only use crash bolts if its specified in the factory service manual).

http://mouton.best.vwh.net/sccasolo/

for more info - that pretty much sums it up. If you want to replace things because they're old (which is a good idea) put the car on jackstands and take it apart. Replace all the bushings with new OE units, rebuild the engine with a .020" bore, put in a new clutch, replace the shocks, and put in new OE shock mounts and go over the brake system and exhaust as well. This can be an expensive way to build a stock class car, but if you want to be competitive with an older car this is the way to go - that and using hoosier's for national events on circle wheels.

My mistake. AC was an option on the CRXs so it can be removed. I am used to my last three hondas were it was installed from the factory.

As for suggestions on your upgrades:
Tires DOT Race compounds - Hoosiers ($$$) or Kuhmos($)
Shocks Koni Yellows or Tokico Illuminas
Pads - Hawk HPS, HP+, Porterfield R4S, or even stock or OK for AutoX. No Slotted Rotors.

Best thing you can do is get lots of seat time!!!!

thanks everyone for your help, i have actually learned everything that i was looking into in a matter of 3 hours talking to you folks...one last question...am i allowed to take out the stock civic driver seat and put in a racing seat? the only reason i ask is that my stock driver seat is torn up right now so i need to replace it regardless and might as well go straight to a racing seat if i am able to, thanks

sorry, i don't think so.

basically, the setup i would like would be the following:

205/55-14 Khumo V700's
Tokico Illumina's
Hawk HP+ pads
Super Blue racing fluid for brakes
Greddy Cat-back exhaust
K&N drop-in filter
NGK blue spark plug wires
NGK spark plugs
New STOCK cap and Rotor
use contact cleaner on all connections
replace ground strap
Oil/lube ALL bushings/moving parts

Ok... again. If its not in the rules that say you can do it then you cannot. Since there is no provision in the rules for a racing seat, then you cant put one in...

And yes koni yellow's are good - you can also have those revalved for autoX and converted to double adjustable. However the shocks can only have 2 independent adjustments - so triple adjustables are a no go. If you wanted to go with more expensive shocks, remote reserviors are permitted (JRZ, Moton).

Yes they do. That's the size we had when we used to run Kumhos on the stock 5.5 inch CRX wheels.

Right everything I posted (which I edited) is the only things you can do. Pick up a rule book, and worry more about seat time than mods. Pay $250 Evolution school will prolly knock off more time than $1000 on shocks. I'd get some Falken Azenis tires - since they are more forgiving than Hoosier, BFGs, or Kumho DOT racing tires. You want to have a learning curve to get better - not have the best stuff out of the box.

You may want to cinsider changing the steering wheel to a smaller after market. It will make a difference. You are allowed to go to a smaller on for stock cars with out airbags...I think there is a limit to how much smaller you can go, you will have ot look in the rules about that. It is not a performance gain, but it makes racing the car much easier. I have one in my 91 CRX. The wheels in the CRX's are terrible...they are thin and big. Just another thought.

No bushings
Yes and no.
No poly or delrin, but I *think* you can change bushings as long as they are made of the same material as the OE ones. I have heard of some Honda guys getting the outrageously expensive Mugen bushings for their stock-classed car because they were made of rubber, like OE. Only much stiffer.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Also in 1991 and older cars, you can change to SS brake lines.

The only bushings that can be anything other than OEM in stock are the front sway bar bushings. You can not use Mugen bushings.

Only if you beat someone that thinks you're cheating.

At the local level people will not care (if you ask) if you have one mod that might put you into another class. Something like a strut bar or intake. You maybe able to run with it for an event or two - but once you start getting better you better find the right class.

Also if you are cheating you should feel bad about it. You know the rules and yet you break them sort of deal.
