is it ok to weld mild steel to stainless steel?

Lets say you have a resonator, exhaust piping, and a muffler. If the muffler and piping are stainless steel, but you have a mild steel resonator welded into the middle of the system, could there be a problem?

I welded my stainless piping to my mild muffler, they like each other now.
