Automatic Transmission problem in 90 accord EX
I am not very familiar with the way transmissions work, so if anyone has any input on what the problem might be I'd really appreciate it.
Anyway, I just purchased a 90 accord ex with an f22a4 and an automatic transmission. The car drives fine, but will not shift into 4th gear. I don't know if that means the gear is bad, or if it is a faulty TCU or shift selector. The other thing that happened once while I was driving, is the shift selector was in Fourth, and I had the cruise set, and it just started to rev up, and I had to press the brakes and select 3rd gear before the transmission caught and was able to drive again.
My initial guess is that is just a bad tranny, but I dont want to buy one and then find out that I need a new TCU. Thanks for your input!

Try shifting the gears manually - start in 1st, then accelerate, shift to 2nd, accelerate, shift to 3rd, accelerate, then shift to 4th. If when you shift to 4th, the engine revs up but your speed does not increase, then probably the clutches that hold in 4th gear are slipping, and the transmission would need to be rebuilt to correct the problem.
When I do that, the transmission usually doesn't even shift, there was only once that I had in 4th, and was driving and suddenly just started revving. Thanks for the help though, I'm probably going to buy one from ebay. Thanks again!
If you look on ebay, try to search under "H22 transmission" and "H22A transmission". The MP1A automatic transmissions that were mated to JDM H22's are stronger than the Accord transmissions - if you ever get to compare the two side-by-side, you'll notice the case on the MP1A has a thicker flange where the bellhousing bolts to the engine block as compared to the USDM Accord automatic. Try to get a transmission with a torque converter, and if you can afford it, get a JDM TCU from a H22 + automatic combination - the shift points are calibrated for the H22. Good luck!
