I am assuming you are talking about a automatic transmission.
I am somewhat unfamiliar with Honda Transmissions. I do drive cars to 300,000+ miles so I have had some transmission problems. It seems you have two choices. The first has worked best for me. That choice is a good used transmission. This is a transmission from a low milage wrecked car. I purchase one for my Mercedes Benz 300D for 800 dollars and installation was 200 dollars. You need a wrecking yard you can trust and offers a warranty. Usually only 90 days but that is enough to make sure it works properly.
The transmission for the honda accord up to 97 seems to be a good one so Hopefully you could find a good used one. Repairs to a transmission are very expensive and unless you find an excellent shop( fairly rare) to do the work you can have problems later. There is a third option which is a rebuilt transmission with a good warranty. I would think a least a one year warranty. This is usually a lot more than the used option but if you plan to keep the car for ever maybe the way to go.

aren't automatic transmissions in accords only 4spd? so why would it have trouble going into 5th? ... if it doesn't have a 5th?
