Not So Healthy Prelude! Torque Converter?!
I have a 98 Prelude with a grinding noise, seems to be coming from the passenger side of the motor/tranny area. It only makes this grinding noise when i have the car in park or neutral. Once the car is in gear it goes away. My car has the automatic/ss transmission. I checked the tranny fluid and it is fine. if there is anyone that can help me out, maybe let me know what i'm in for!
, or maybe it's an easy fix?
The car drives and performs fine, as it should. I had my friends dad listen to it, and he said it could be the torque converter. Does anyone know if this is for certain. All of your time and responses are greatly appreciated!

I dont have any idea why a torque converter would make noise unless it was really low on fluid or something... torque converter doesnt sound like it
Hmmm . . I stopped by the honda dealership today, and they said that they didnt have a clue what the noise is. They wanted me to keep my car there so they could teardown the whole transmission and what not to just look for anything that was wrong. I didn't even ask them for a price on that.
Honda hourly rates = I hope that comes with a gallon of KY. I sure hope you have some sort of tranny warranty with the car, you're going to need it.

buy a replacement AT from someone here on H-T.
sell the car. buy a 5speed.
the 5th gen AT/SS is a well documented pain in the ***.

What will a used AT Tranny cost me from someone here online?
What about costs of a 5sp. conversion?
Ive been waiting for this day because i knew the AT were worthless. what would be the cost difference of replacing the AT compared to doing a 5sp. conversion?
sorry for all the questions, i just can't seem to find the answers i'm looking for on the internet anywhere.

if you can find a replacement SS, which usually goes for, i think $700 or so, the install won't cost too much. 6 hours at a shop, though you could do it yourself.
a 5 speed conversion will cost around 2G or so. depending on who you find to do the work.

If I we're you, just do the swap instead of spending extra dough on the auto and selling the car and then the headache of finding another. I have no clue how much the swap would be though, around 2000 I hope?
Alright, Thank you ever so much for you time and help! This helps so much! i am going to a local shop in the morning see what he can do, and then on the way home from school imma swing by the dealership, see what they have to say. i will let you know. i really wanna get rid of the AT/SS, very badly. we'll see what happens. in the mean time, anyone looking to get rid of an AT tranny or 5sp. tranny?
