When i took my transmission out to put my new clutch in a circular green felt piece fell out...now i have no idea where it came from but now its time for me to put it all back together and i dont know where this piece needs to go...can ANYONE tell me what this piece is for

 

I've had my clutch out twice and put a new one into another D16. Now, minding the fact that both were D16Z6s, I have never encountered a piece of circluar green felt. I have seen one at the auto parts store that people put around a battery terminal. What kind of engine and trans do you have? What does the piece of felt look like? thick, thin, big, small? More info would definitely be helpful.

 

its a thin piece of green felt with slits about a half inch around on each side stopping so that it doesnt just leave a giant hole in the middle...if you put your thumb and pointer finger together to make a circle...thats about the size of it...i can try and get a pic of it tomorrow...

Do you have any idea where this part fell out of? Honestly, each time I have torn apart my motor, I haven't seen the piece you describe, or at least the one I'm visualizing from your description. It is possible it is something that broke off of something else, what I don't know. I do know that the Z6 I pulled out of my 94 was a little different than the Z6 I pulled out of my 92. What year is yours? A pic may well help some.

 

I take it you figured out what the piece was?

 

sounds like the piece of felt that people put under the battery terminal to prevent corrosion. it was probably misplaced and found its way to the tranny area

 

yeah... that's what I was thinking. I have had my tranny off more times than I care to think about and haven't ever encountered something like that.

 

i just finished putting in a new clutch... never again will i mess with the tranny!!!

 

That's just what I said the first time I had mine out. The second time, I had the whole engine out. I'm just waiting for the third time.

 

I dont know where it came from but it fell to the ground when i seperated the bell housing from the rest of the tranny...forgot about pics today was really busy...ill get em though...it looks like the felt for a battery terminal but dont those have a hole cut out in the middle to fit around the terminal? this has slits like this ( ) about a half inch away from the edge...hard to explain but im thinking it was just something caught in the engine and fell loose when i broke the bell housing loose...anyways i already have the tranny back up so im hope to god it didnt go inside or i might drop kick the tranny off next time

anyways its a 94 and the experts at SolSociety say its nothing and there is no felt inside the engine bay unless its a terminal piece...so im not worried
