my speedometer tach is bouncing around and totaly not giving the right mph. for example i'll be doing around 45mph or 50 and the tach needle will be bouncing around near 10 to 35 mph.

any clue?

 

I think I might understand what you're talking about.. If your tach needle is bouncing around and your car is starting to run like ****, it sounds like your distributor is starting to go bad.. Happened to me, I had to buy a new dizzy.

 

wich one is bouncing the rpm gauge or the speed gauge
if its the speed gauge i would recomend getting a new cable

 

no no the car runs fine the rpm gauge is fine its just the speedometer thats bouncing

 

this happened after the engine swap

 

Try cleaning the contacts on the VSS plug.

What engine did you swap, and did you reuse your stock VSS?

Edit: forgot this was the EF forum . . . make sure you got the cable all the way into the VSS. Sometimes this is tricky.

 

b16a and i didnt do the swap so im not sure if they reused them or not ? sorry

 

push your spedo cable all the way into the transmission, whoever did the swap probably didnt put the retaining clip back on

Check your ground wires off the engine. I replaced a distributer and it cleared the problem for a day, then found a ground wire was not hooked back up. ... one of those simple problems that cost me more time and headache then I care to remember.

 

its the speedo cable
check if it's been inserted properly on your gauge cluster, then check where its plugged into the transmission.

for not doing the swap yourself or at least overseeing it get done and understanding the process.

 

its more than likely the speedo cable. if its too short and keeps pulling out of your VSS pick up one from a 1990-93 integra from a junk yard. it will give you a bit more length. also if they didn't remove your guage cluster i wouldn't think its pulling out of the guage cluster side, but if this doesn't help pop it out and take a look.

 

Check the IGNITOR in the distributor. I think AutoZone or some place like that can even test it for you.
