Whhhirrrring sound after timing belt replacement *help*
Okay, heres the scoop
I had the timing belt replaced a little before 90k on my 97 SH, being that i was getting nervous, whereupon the oem belt was replaced with a Goodyear belt. Since then, the belt has been as loud as hell. Its been over a thousand miles, so the belt is "broken in". Now my mechanic, whom i trust very much, been taking all of our cars to him for 15 years, says that the belt is about 60% stronger than the oem belt. So, would it be safe to assume that since the belt is stronger, it is thicker, therefore more material must circulate around the drive system, thereby creating the whirring sound?
Other Facts:
-The whirrring sound increases/decreases with engine speed
-On my moms accord, and my previous 86 prelude, when the timing belt was replaced, they made very similair noises as well.
Bottom Line:
Im assuming this brand of timing belt is just inherantly loud, making similiar noises on F, H and A series motors.
I cant stand this noise, i just wanted to check with you guys before i tell him to put on an OEM belt. My girlfriend says it sounds like a spaceship
Thanks for reading all of this shat

heh, we had a new timing belt put on my 00 lude at 72000 miles just for safety...it makes a winding noise, kind of like you describe. I have heard other prelude make that noise, I actually have a video of a lude vs a z28 where you can hear the ludes timing belt, it sounds identical to mine - if you want the video, just let me know...
I have a 97 SH as well...I will tell you I had the same noise happen to my car....When I acceralted it the sound went with it. You can hear it when it's just idling.....People thought I had some other type of modication. If the sound is the same or sounds like mine....Guess what was wrong with my car. The water pump was going out. After replacing the pump my friend showed it to me and spin the little fines on the pump and I heard the noise, but at a soft pitch....
This could be your problem...If so you can knock it out...
There is no way the belt can make the noise. The goodyear belt and oem are the exact same all around...One is just stronger than the other.... Another thing It can't be over tighten because of the Hydraulic tensioner. Just Ckeck the pump.......And go from there.......Try to replace all parts with OEM.......ANybody will tell you, you can't go wrong with OEM....
If you do not know this site here it is .....Whole sale on OEM products.....
I used it for everything on my 97 lude...

It was not tightened properly. Same thing happened to my mom's accord, after it was adjusted the sound dissapeared.
The first time I did my timing belt, I forgot to replace the washer that follows the balance shaft tensioner, so when I tightened down the nut to secure the two tensioners, it made a whine/whirr that sounds something like a supercharger whine.

Okay, so basically, there are 2 things that i need to check:
1. Water Pump
2. Balance Shaft Tension
Okay, lets say for a minute that it is the water pump making the noise. What does that mean? Does that mean its going to take a crap? My car doesnt run any warmer than normal.
Also, if it is the water pump, why didnt it make the noise right BEFORE the timing belt replacment? I'm not sure if i emphasized the fact that this noises was non-existant prior to the timing replacment, and started immediatly afterwards. Thanks for your help guys

I am not sure of this, i will ask my mechanic. I assume i was supposed to? Okay, so thats another thing to the list.
But im still curious why this SAME EXACT sound was present after installing the SAME EXACT belt on THREE different cars, all with different motors. With this still not addressed, im still more inclined to think that it is the belt making this noise, although i will certainly check into the other items as well. Thanks again.

I had the same noise for a couple of years on my 93 si. I didn't tighten the belt the recommended way. I just tightened til it felt right. I recently replaced the water pump and timing belts, but this time I did it the correct way and it eliminated the noise. I concluded it was the balancing shaft belt that was making the noise. I say that because when I was trying to figure out the noise I tried packing the bearings with grease, sprayed belt dressing on the timing belt, put pressure on the belt as it was turning, figured the pitch would at least change, but nothing worked. I never messed with the balancing belt though til this time, and the noise is gone.
