How often should I replace timing belt in 1997 Civic?
I brought my 1997 Honda Civic EX (stock D16Y8) to the dealer for an oil change today and the service guy told me that I'm 2 years overdue for a timing belt replacement. He said that the timing belt should be replaced at 90,000 miles or every 6 years, whichever comes first. I've had my car since it was brand new for 8 years, but it only has 48,800 miles. Should I change my timing belt? If not, when should I change it?
Hey my manual says 60,000 miles (US) and 100,000 km (Canada). I have a 97 civic Dx. I've never heard of the 6 years thing; but maybe they are suggesting dry rott or the belt just being wore out if its been so many years.

Hey, that's interesting. My manual says to replace timing belt & check water pump at 105,000 miles or 84 months (7 years) and the manual is for all 1997 Honda Civics.

The service guy told me that regardless of mileage, it has been 8 years and the rubber could deteriorate.
I don't mind replacing if I have to, but I don't want to waste money if I don't have to. I'm thinking that it probably isn't necessary to replace the timing belt just yet.

They aren't trained in that feild for their health. He knows what he is talking about. I would personally get it changed. Better safe than sorry.

I'm not sure about that. It was not a mechanic who told me this. It was the guy at the counter right when I brought the car in without even looking at the timing belt.

How can i check for wear.I have a 99 si with 88000 that i just bought and i am not sure if the previous owner had changed it. so how can i check the condition of it? what do i need to remove to see it? thanks
It's the manual that came with my car from the Honda Manufacture. My dad works at Honda and he usually says around 75,000 miles or at least thats when I changed the one in my old accord when I had it. I guess no matter who you ask your gonna get a different answer with no "exact" milage. I say if you are still using the Honda dealership and their peferred customer program that Honda owners use to obtain "Genuine Honda Maintanence" then go by what they say so if something happens your covered. If you know how to do it yourself and your worried, then knock it out one day on a weekend. Good luck.

you can see grooves on the belt if it has not been changed.
