Default Removing wrist pins???

Stock p72 rods and pistons.
They are at a local machine shop and they called me and said that they might end up breaking the pistons trying to press them off, or damage the the piston in another way. Is there a speical tool or something to go along with the press?
Any info would help.

There's a special tool that supports the side of the conrod for pressing out the wrist pins. It greatly reduces the risk of breaking the pistons, but there's still the chance of warping the piston pin boss area and the skirt.

There's only one shop in my area that has one. No big surprise. They're like $300 from Goodson. http://www.goodson.com

Yeah, there's a special tool for that. Unfortunately, when I tried to look up the part numbers, I found them all, but of the 9 (!) tools in the wrist pin setup, only like 2 are actually availible, and the total for all 9 of them is around $300.

It really is difficult to remove the pins without tearing up the piston.

In the experience of the three machine shops (racing and general automotive-wise), it's always a bit of a risk.

I've had four sets of interference-fit pins removed and only one set came back to me without breaking any of the four pistons. The other three sets all had at least one that broke.

thanks for the replys..I guess I am better off finding some other pistons that are already pressed (or new) off to put on my rods....
