Stolen Type R compilation
Hey all,
As a paranoid teg owner who has had his car stolen once already, I cant help but wonder what parking situations places our coveted prizes in the most risk. Since I have an eternity of time while here at work, Ive compiled the following in hopes that it may help you fellow R owners assess your risk.
1. fastvtecCL attempted theft in garage
2. Brent V (reported by Haleiwa-Brando) stolen on Microsoft campus
3. TigRo703 stolen from driveway
4. Itrsport.com (friend of) Stolen from mall parking lot
5. Batouahell stolen from garage
6. zerOzerO Type R stolen from apartment
7. djSALIX (cousin of) stolen from garage
8. Fuuma0083 stolen from driveway
9. Mei85 (brother of) stolen from driveway
10. STOLEN ITR 98-0652 stolen from driveway

22. tekkynikality stolen from driveway
23. PYITR821 stolen from driveway
24. Shipsaeki stolen from school campus
25. Spikey (brother of) stolen from driveway
26. 97 Type R 85 stolen from driveway
27. Adbuster stolen from driveway

32. Mugen2pt2 - stolen from driveway
33. itr1293 - Stolen from work
34. ITRbroham - stolen from driveway
35. 617arg - stolen from garage
Note: this list may contain errors since I was not willing to read past page 1 of each thread. If your stolen ride has been omitted, it may be due to the lack of the theft details being posted or the search criteria that I used.
Predictable Locations
Driveway = 21
Apartment Complex = 4
Garage = 5
Campus / work = 3
Random Location
Commercial / retail parking lot = 2
Obviously, the highest theft risk your car will see is in a predictable parking location. Within the sample above, 21 out of 35 were stolen in the driveway. Thieves have the opportunity to see what time would be best for them to steal the car and have the homework done upfront. In the case of my car being stolen, the thieves were well prepared and knew what anti-theft devices to defeat. It doesnt surprise me to see multiple garage thefts above its simply another layer to defeat.
The surprising numbers above are the (2) incidents of theft in a commercial or retail area. I would have to assume the owners did not have layered security OR it was just plain bad luck since a thief just happened to have the right game plan and tools to steal an R.
In either case, I think the numbers speak for themselves that your car is at highest risk when you have a routine. Unfortunately, if youre one of those who park in front of a house or apartment, its only a matter of time.
What is the best theft deterrent you ask? Unpredictability.

I guess it's a result of reading all the STOLEN: threads on websites.
Seriously though - I personally don't turn on all layers when at a bar, mall, etc. Sometimes, doing all that switch flipping, autolock placement, etc does not go well on a date.

you mean switch flipping....
you mean switch flipping....
if i am in an area where the risks of my car being stolen goes up, i will arm ALL my security devices for sure. however, i have accepted that my car is inevitably going to be stolen or wrecked. therefore, i can only enjoy MY car to the FULLEST. thieves ARE the SCUM of the earth!!!
good job on the pointers, but many are aware of the risks of where they take their car. unfortunately, many would prefer having a beater car, but cannot afford it.
hopefully the theft dies down a little bit more with increased awareness/security.

At first, I did attempt to add this info with the compilation. Due to the lack of details on most threads, I had to leave it out.
Sorry, Brudda!

Thanks, bro. Not really a newbie -- just someone who has used the search feature for years on here to research performance options and shop for classifieds.

For those of you whom drive your R to work or school, try parking in a different spot every day. I notice the same cars parked in the same sections of the parking structure everyday when I go to work. If a thief knows what section of the parking structure/lot you park at every day, he'll get to it faster.
