vtec fails after not changing oil after 2500 miles

vtec fails after not changing oil after 2500 miles
after i dont change my oil for 2500 miles my vtec seams like its sputtering and and after about 3200 miles it doesnt work at all. when i put my car on the computer it says that the vtec solenoid had failed. why would it fail only when i dont change my oil after a certain ammount of time?
