Default Koni Sport Shocks + Ground control sleeve question

I just got my Koni sport shocks back from Koni, they re-valved them for me (SPSS3 valves). Needed more dampening for the high spring rates 800lbs/ich 1000lbs/ich. Anyway when I 1st got the socks several years back I got them as part of a ground control coil over kit. Then came to me with a black retainer ring fitted to the shock bodies just over the koni snap rings, and the threaded sleeves then rested on them. However koni took the retainer rings off (I asked them to move them down to the next groove). They did move the snap ring down, but they didn't put the black retainer rings over top of it like it was when I 1st got them from ground control. (took some pics take a look on down)

What should I do to get the black retainer rings back on? It is a very very tight fit and it seems they need to be pressed on. I'm sure this will strip all the nice new paint that koni just put on the socks. Should I machine the rings out just a hair so they will slide over the paint and onto the snap ring, or is pressing them on my only real option? What do you guys think I should do?

Thanks to anyone who read this!

maybe try some lube or something.

If you felt like shelling out a small amount of money you could purchase the "baby tubes" and eliminate the black part

I tried lube, no go. I will have to sand off some if not most of the paint to get them back on. I will just have to re-paint the shocks. Maybe make them into Koni purples.

I will get them on there one way or another, but that perty new paint will not make it past the next few days.

That happened to me on my rear Koni's. I just used some sandpaper, and it worked out perfectly. The fit is very tight.

Try dropping the ring into some boiling water for a couple of minutes and then try to slide it on. (disregard this suggestion if its plastic and if you think itll melt)

I would try the oven. Boiling water doesn't get over 100 degrees C, but I guess thats still pretty hot. Once their on though, thats it. I think it would be pretty hard to get them back off.

Baby tubes rule (I striped the paint off for fun, not because they didn't fit)...

Boiling water, or even a heat gun should do the job to open up the hole and slide it on.

Try that first. Heat the ring, not the shock.

update: I heated them up to about 400F in the oven (they are metal btw), and they slid right on.

Anyone else amazed that the little yellow clip ring on the shock body holds up 1000lbs of car + all other forces?

Is there any chance you could measure the outside diameter of your "baby tubes" for me? Right on top of the threads is fine. I have some collars (from Ground Control) and they don't fit the tubes I got elsewhere (used GC tubes I bought from someone else). I'd just like to know if the collars I have will fit the baby tubes.

I am concerned that you may not have the correct parts. The black ring needs to "capture" the circlip on the Koni. By that, I mena it needs to both be on top of and around the side of the circlip. If it is only resting on top then you need another part. Koni has a little silver cup ring that captures the circlip.

Please read this whole thread about what might happen if you do not install properly (make sure you read CRXLee's post) https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1111164

alan
