Default Running Lean!!!!

I have a stock 99 si motor into a 96 EK. Its been running fine for over a yr now. Just recently I got a CEL stating its too lean. What can cause my car to run lean? Could a bad O2 cause this? Please let me know with ur inputs.

a O2 sensor would normally make it run to rich your fuel pump, injectors or fuel filter might be starting to go I would check all those and go from there

are you running OBD1 or OBD2?

are you using a fuel pump for a B-series?

have you changed your fuel filter?

are you running a stock ECU?

I'm runnning it obd2....I'm using a 99 civic si fuel pump...How do I check if the fuel filter is bad???? Will bad spark plugs cause it to run lean as well? And yes I'm running a stock ECU (96 del sol P30)...

Before you start going crazy testing everything, FIRST Check and double check the Primary o2 sensor. I guarantee that is the problem. When I did a mini me swap a couple of years ago after driving around with it for 3 months I got a check engine light, saying its running lean. So I checked the fuel pressure, and the o2, they both tested good. so I went to a couple of sites to see if I can get some help, so evryone told me that I should be using a ex ecu, so I bought and it didn't do anything, so I resold it on ebay. then i went to a shop and they said its the fuel filter, and I did drive around a couple times on "E". So I said yeah thats a possiblity. But still didn't help. So I tried an extra o2 sensor that had lying around. Still nothing. So I was like what the ****. So after a month, I though to myself, it has to be the o2 sensor, so I called HAP, and ordere one for $60. And BAMM that was it, so even though, i tried 2 o2 sensors and they tested good. They were still bad. SO DEFINITLY test the o2 first. I BET 100% that thats your problem. Your fuel injectors and pump will not go out on you this soon. I don't wanna hear that bullshit. So if you faggs don't know a solution or an answer to a question, don't post what ever pops up into your head. And you don't need a si fuel pump. That just makes no ****** sense!!!!

^ well apparently hondadriver knows everything about hondas. so make sure you listen to him, i guess nothing can ever fail on a honda except for O2 sensors.

I'm not saying I now everything you ****** **** sucker, its just that you don't know ****, see theres the problem, you don't know what the **** your talking about and you wann post like you do because you own a hond ! Its just that the first thing to check is the o2 sensor. Not the fuel pump, injectors, etc. Every response to this post was point less and helped nothing.

Sammysnakes: Why don't you go buy your self an extra si fuel pump just in case you get a cel saying your car is running lean!!

So sleeperek, hondadriver says to get an o2 sensor. he bets 100% thats your problem. So if it doesn't fix it are you willing to pay him back for the 02 sensor?

""So if it doesn't fix it are you willing to pay him back for the 02 sensor?""

Thats so gay. Why did you even post that ! I said I BET, """BET""" , 100% its the o2. So my money is on the o2 sensor.

So if its not the fuel pump or injectors are you gonna pay him back for those??

I just think people need to stop blurding out answers, as IF they new what they were talking about. Just like the post about "white smoke". the first 4 replys were "oh its your head gasket". I only post when i have experience samilar to the problem that is posted or know someone that had that kind of problem. 3 word answers are not enough. explain to the other person why you think that can be the problem. back up your answer so they can learn and understand why you came up with that answer.

so what if someone was wrong about a answer there is no reason to fight about it, the point is to help people out with there problems here not to call each other **** suckers and **** like that. I said the fuel pump and injectors cause Im speaking from experience just like you did hondadriver with your 02 sensor but the point of this post is to help this guy out

wow, i guess you're right and i don't know anything about what sensors do. it makes sense considering i'm only a lowlife BMW tech and wouldn't know anything about how sensors + computers communicate. i guess a too lean code actually means that the O2 sensor is faulty instead of the idea that the sensor might possibly be doing it's job and informing you of a too lean/rich condition...i guess your 1 experience overshadows all the individuals @ honda that designed the engine comm. to actually work.

the reason i asked those questions was to get a better understanding of his setup so i could then make a good suggestion and not base it on 1 situation.

and i didn't even say one of the things you quoted me saying, but what he said is also correct, genius.

to see if it could be the o2 sensor pull a few spark plugs and see how they look. if you are truely running lean they will tell you. my guess would be either a fuel filter or a vaccum leak

well since the spark plugs show you running lean, and the 02 sensor confirms it i would look somewhere else other then the 02 sensor. I would try the fuel filter

If there are any leaks into the intake manifold it could also cause problems. Intake gasket? Common on some fords, it will cause the 02 to read lean and the MAF doesnt' detect it so it throws a code. Just a thought.

what was the actual code #? there are some codes that sound like the o2 sensor is reading that the exhaust is lean, when it means that computer may have reached it's max lean limit. meaning the o2 sensor could be reading full rich and the computer is leaning it out without seeing any reading change in the o2.

just a possibility, so don't anyone get mad at me if they think it is a stupid idea.

""well since the spark plugs show you running lean, and the 02 sensor confirms it i would look somewhere else other then the 02 sensor. I would try the fuel filter""

NO, that doesn't eliminate the O2. Becasue my spark plugs were white as **** to. So don't eliminate it as a possiblity becuase it CONFIRMED IT.

Sammysnakes:

Oh, so your a lowlife BMW tech! Wow that must suck. So becasue you change tires on BMW's and read step by step directions on how to troubleshoot a problem on a car just like I do in my garage makes you mister right. I'm not trying to be as *** or talk ****, My point was have him start with the easiest thing first. Why go **** with the fuel pump and all that **** when we can take him step by step and cancel out one thing at a time. After all the computer gets the signal from the O2 and tells the ecu what to do either lean it out or make it more rich. So start from there. 02 senors aways go on all cars. they're known to fail, thats probably all his problem is. but its hard to test, because I tested mine, just like the helms book told me to, and when I went to a shop, they plugged in the computer into my diagnostic port and it also said my o2 is working properly.
