Default Dim headlights

I have a 90 accord LX and the headlights are very dim. i replaced the bulbs with some "high performance" halogens but instead of the dim yellow I have a dull white glow. Any ideas what to check? The alternator went so I replaced it with a junkyard bit, the battery is new though. Thanks.

check that they're aligned properly, if the alignment is hosed you might just be lighting the ground or sky...not what's in front of you

They are aimed properly, the problem is beam intensity. I thought perhaps that the bulbs were just old, the lenses are a bit cloudy though. I am thinking there is a wiring issue. Any body have any other ideas?
