First you need to get a free assesment from a good transmission shop. This is not easy as their are lots of shops that don't have a clue. It could just be the electrical senoids that need replacement. After the est. to fix the problem you may want to consider a good used transmission. Probably hard to find for an 88 but not impossible. Low milage wreck is what you are looking for. Would not recommend a rebuild unless you get a GREAT Warrenty on it. If the rest of the car is worth it don't let people discourage you.
