Default how to mod a ls to perfection?

i am thinking about getting a teggy soon(this year) and i found 2. one is a 95 LS with manual tranny for $5g and the other is a 98 GSR for $7G. most likely my parents will get me the LS cuz its "cheaper". the ls has never been beaten on cuz my cousin knows the owner and he loves his cars.

the ls comes with greddy headers and exhaust with thermo cat back and short shifter and act flywheel.

i know the LS dont have that great of a hp to start with and i heard that the ls is pretty hard to mod without vtec and i dont want to do a motor swap. i know the ls is pretty good for turbo cuz of the lower compression. but i want to go N/A and also have a budget.

what are some other mods i can go with that will boost up my power to about 190+ hp?

This is true. But unfortunately, you have an LS. Not much else to do. I found that out after spending a few hundred on worthless bolt-ons for my LS.

Then I decided to get serious and actually make some power.

I guess you could modify it for LS/Vtec if you wanted. But that's boring.

My sentiments exactly. Get the GS-R, convince your parents that the car is newer, more reliable, less miles, etc.

well, the 98 GRS that i wanted is acually more milage then the 95 ls.
the 98 grs have 112,XXX miles and the 95 LS have 94,XXX miles.

so the more milage excuse is gone. lol.
but im still working on another excuse that goes "but the gsr is newer" lol

cheapest way to put you over 190whp is nitrous.

going N/A and trying to break 190 will cost you more then a turbo set up. And with a turbo set up you could see into the 200's easily.

yea ls to turbo is great. look to spending $3,500 - 4,000. if i were you, i'd wait for the gsr if your parents don't mind waiting.

you can put together a fairly inexpensive turbo kit.
a lot less than 3,500-4000.

ls + boost seems to work very good together, so it's your best bet.
and you dont need to put out $3K at once either, buy things as you go along. thats how a lot of people do it.

another option is nitrous.
bolt-ons + nitrous can be very helpful getting some performance, but do some research on that. you dont wanna break stuff quickly...

good luck on whatever you and your parents decide.

thanks for all the helpful info. i just fond a 94 gsr with 96,xxx miles on it and the asking price is $4500 or better offer.
i talked to my mom and she is pretty happy with the price. now i gotta talk to my dad.

you think i can lower the price down to $3500? or is that too low? i was thinking $4000 but my mom wants me to ask for $3500 and i think its pretty low.

you found a good car, offer 4000, i doubt they would go any lower........if you have the cash ready, i would be a great way to leverage the seller.......make sure you check out the car.....gsr's are generally abused, and that asking price is a tad low for that car...........

LSturbo is the way to go . . LS motors have more torque but suck on topend due to the lack of VTEC . . that's where the turbo helps alot

here's how i calculated the cost for turbo for ls, if you go greddy. and if your buying w/o connections.

Greddy turbo kit: $2,313
Intercooler: 500-700
BOV: 100-200
turbo timer:100-180
guages: 60-160 (depends)
Piping: custom 3' 300-400

after turbo:
New clutch: 200-350
Upgrade FMU: 400+
Tune: 300-600

I mean, this is just what i can find off the internet, but i also did not use ebay motor's price. i'm also not skilled enough to where i can piece the kit together.

i still see the price $3,500 - 4,000. how do you figure the cost less?

don't get discouraged by all the VTEC fans. LS can make nice power, N/A. start with rebuilding the block with ARP fasteners, ITR pistons, and factory bearings and such. won't cost too much if you do it yourself. for my car, i priced that out at about $550. then, good street portwork, aftermarket valve springs and retainers, and big cams. another $1200ish, maybe a bit more depending on what you do. boom. some fuel management, like SAFC or something, and you got a nice motor, reliable as hell, pulls great down low, and has zing just like (if not better than) gs-r. oh, and then LSD. you'll need it very soon.

a well built ls-vtec is a beautiful thing. they have potential to make alot of power, still have good gas mileage, if built correctly are very reliable, and it's the best thing to be able to tell a guy i just smashed the **** out of your turbo setup with my N/A

ok first of all ur going to have to spend alot of money and i do mean a lot of money to do a LS/Vtec properly and reliably. second of all u'll have to build it quite a bit to beat a Turbo set up......

As long as we're just comparing LS/turbo to GSR, there's no need to add every option to the turbo kit!

i know one good mod on a ls is to change the tranny, opt for a gs-r or b16 trans, thats gonna be my next mod prolly and as of right now i sometimes beat or stay right with gs-r's....to me vtec is way over rated...
