So I was standing at the ATM today just minding my own business when this old guy standing behind me points to my car and asks me if its mine. I say yeah and he asks me if I think it's fast and I respond by saying that its pretty quick. Anyways, he points on his car (3rd gen Si) and asks me if I want to race. I tell him Im in a hurry, but I ask him if he has any mods. He replies by saying that he has none, but that he would take me in a race because he has 4WS. I chuckled, got my money and went on my way. I have to believe this guy is full of , but then I realized I have no clue (besides seeing it referred to here) what 4WS is. What the hell is it? And Id assume it affects handling and not speed.

 

I thought only the 4th gens have 4ws? It's where all the wheels turn. (It helps improve steering make turns easier.) I belive the rear wheels turn the opposite way from the fronts. Some clowns confuse this with all wheel drive. I've actually had an idiot tell me he'll beat me in a race cuz he has 4ws. I just looked at him like he was stupid and went about my business.

Humm.. 4ws it means pretty much nothing in race, it sure can help in control but then speed wise... i don't think he could beat you if you got 01 lude anyway.
but racing can bring you bad luck..><
my license got suspended for 9 months because of it..T,T
i will get my license back this april but then i might race again..--; because the care makes me to speed and have fun i guess.

if you two were to drag race, the 4ws would have no affect. if you two were to autocross, or road race around some hefty corners, he would have a much better chance than you with his 4ws.

the way 4ws works is determined by the amount you turn the steering wheel. in the first 15 degrees of the turn, the front and rear wheels turn the same direction. this is to help you change lanes on the highway swifter and easier, for example. after that 15 degrees, the more you turn the steering wheel, the rear wheels then center and turn opposite the front wheels. by the time you have done the full rotation of the steering wheel, the front and rear wheels will be completely opposite directions. that makes sharper cornering easier and faster. this is a great feature in a parking lot, and for sharp turns. that is basically what 4ws was designed for.

 

You have gotta be kidding me. There is no question that the 3rd generation with 4ws will even come close, you gotta know something about your car, 200 hp vs 130 4ws hp. Maybe off the start he might get half a car length but after that ,it's over! Have confidence in your car, and know that stock vs stock you will smoke that poor old man! Later

 

I know there was no question that I could beat him. I was more interested in why he thought he could and what 4WS is.

 

4ws does not mean four wheel drive too. in a drag, the 3rd gen would get killed. in autocross, it could be a toss-up, but i would lean more towards the 4ws third gen then the 5th gen. i would like to see them both compete though.
