Default What tires are you guys using for a DD that sees some autocross action?

Unless Omni Power gets there product to market soon for the ep3 I will get the Mugen SS coilovers setup and I am starting to look for some complimentary tires. My car is a DD that sees a couple hours of commuting every day and I will run some local autocross events this year. I hate the oem tires, not very good wet or dry grip and they are tall and skinny. I want something that will get high end grip in the wet and dry, not worried about snow, and of course has a wider tread pattern with a lower/stiffer sidewall. Just like everyone else I want a good bang for my buck and I am not willing to spend a ton on a depreciating asset and it needs to fit on the 16" oem rims and not rub anyplace with the above mentioned drop.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Don't know about sizes, but Yoko AVS ES100s work fine for double duty. Plan on buying about a set a year if you do lots of AutoX. Not the best grip when compared to an Azenis or something, but its pretty good and they let you know when they're going to let go. I ran them for a year and did fine, then went out and bought a second set of wheels just for AutoX, its easier.

About how much are they going for? I guess you mounted your second set on "race rims" and you swap them out when go to an event?

Anyone else with any suggestions? What is the consensus on the Kumho 712's, they are dirt cheap on Tirerack.com, but the reviews are mixed.

They suck in everything but rain. The ES100's are a far beter tire in the dry.

Looks like the Yokos get a pretty good review. I am planning on using the Mugen SS coilovers and the oem 16" wheels, anyone know how wide and low I can go? 205/40?? 225/45?? I want as much tire as I can get on there without rubbing or rolling them into the wheel.

Thanks

If Yokohama sells the Advan AD07 stateside, grab this for a street tire, it blows away the DNA GPs(ES100) in everything-dry and wet grip, less bark when pushed hard, has a more agressive tread pattern. Of course they are easily double the price, but for a street tire that sees gymkana and touge running they are holding their own. Do want to pick up some A048s for gymkana, if and when I do, I'll put those on the stocker R wheels.

Why not try a 215/45, how wide is the stock 16", I thought it was about 6.5"? I wouldn't go much wider than 215, but that is me. Hell I use a 215 on a 8" wheel.

he's right. I have these tires and they are awesome. they do sell it in the state but the only size I see that we can use is a 225/45/17.

Planning on sticking with the 16" rim for right now, so I guess that one is out. Beside I see the 100's for about $80/tire at tirerack, so if the other ones are double the price they had better last a long, looooong time and still have great performance.

I think the oem rims are 6.5", who knows what I squeeze on there?

I used a 225/45/17 with 17x7.5" rims and had zero rubbing problems on my RSX with Mugen SS suspension. No fender roilling, etc. There's a lot of room under there.

I might be selling the Mugen SS suspension if you'd be interested...

Will your coilovers bolt onto an ep3? If so when are selling them and for how much?

I don't know if the Mugen SS for an RSX will fit an EP3 or not. I posted them for sale in the thread at the top of this forum.
