Default Adjustable Cam Gears

I recently had a d16z dropped into my 92 civic and the engine already had some mods. One of these mods was aem adjustable cam gears. What can you gain by adjusting these. I never asked the guy who installed the engine because I thought it was like a timing adjuster. When I sat down with my repair manual browsing for things to check and adjust I cam across cam gears and realized I could adjust mine. Anyone know why you should and if so what would be the best setting's? Any help appreciated.

DO you have just the cam gear or did he install an aftermarket cam too. To the best of my knowledge the cam gear lets to advance or retard timing. But it won't really do much without an aftermarket cam. Maybe you can advance a couple of degrees with the stock cam and get some advantage but im not sure..bump

It has an aftermarket cam too. I know that honda's run interfernce type engines. Is it possible to cause serious internal damage. Also what will I really gain by adjusting.
