whats with the ring of buildup around the top of my cylinder walls ?

it is normal, the piston rings don't reach up to the top of the cylinders, that is why you get those marks

with the exception of it running rich, yes

EDIT: although you are missing a head stud in the picture

it was also burning a lot of oil due to bad valve seals...so im sure that didnt help that buildup on the pistons

The build up isn't what indicates a rich burn. Its the clean *** intake side of the pistons that show the excess amount of fuel washing the cylinders.

Dude whats your set up looks cool man. Looks like a B18c1 bottom block and Over sized CTR pistons. you are missing one head bolt where it at hope you find it.
JK Artie tell me when you need to put it back togethere and i will do so. I had fun pulling it apart.
