Has anyone had the same problem with S2 cam gears as we have?
The new design for the cam gears has a terrible flaw. has anyone else noticed this! Take your cam gear and mount it on the cam before you install, but dont use the keyway. put on the bolt 35 ft pnds and see if your cam gear spins like a ferris wheel if it does, send it back or you will end up eating up your motor in less than a week! we have a customer who provided 8 grand in product to build his motor and unfortunately 2 days later the motor mysteriously dropped a valve. I didn't find this out until one day my self and Jeramey from red zone were checking the cam after i found it was 5 degrees off from where it was set sure enough we took out the key way and the gear spun like my rear axel. the cam gears are to thin. they are supposed to stick out past the end of the cam for the keyway not to hold all of the pressure from the high lift cams. Bad QC. anyway this is not a S2 flame but it did cause a customer who saved a lot of money for two years and came from vacaville ca. to san jose (2 hours) to have me build his motor to only have his hole investment shot down the drain in 2 days, he now has to either sue which will cost him more than the initial investment so hes *** out, who else has has this problem? guy's please check this before you install the cam gears and for all of you distributors double check them. I would hate to see this happen to your customers. Now I am out of alot of money in Fixing this problem for free labor and my customer is going to come out of his pocket another 4 to 5 grand to fix his head and rebuild the block. I'm a buisness man and i hate to see customers get chumped by manufacturer's who cant take care of buisness. I lent my customer a B-16 so he could get back to work and help his grand folks out so they dont have to keep taking him to work and i needed space in my shop to make room for new jobs so i will end up doing 3 swaps for the price of one! the nice thing though is the customer even though the motor blew up they respected my work so much when the brought the car back when we didn't know the cause they dropped of another motor for me to build! thats what this is all about. help these young guys to do it right the first time so this sport can keep growing! peeps need to stop screwing these young bucks so we dont kill our sport. its neccesary for the survival of our sport.
That certainly does suck! An eight grand motor toasted by $200 cam gears
Glad to hear that you are helping the guy out some.

if the guys that supply the products wont look out for us who will? I wish everyone good luck in the 2005 season!
its important to look out for the little guys we have no problem sharing any of our info, right down to our combos, ive even given out our programs to help other racers i race against. Iv'e even lent a fellow competitor a tranny only to have to race them the next day in the first round and the karma helped we won and unfortunatly they were in the points chase. but we all have to put on a good show for our sponsers. we lend out parts to anyone who needs them. ask anyone we are down folks.
Out of curiousity, when were these (s2) cam gears manufactured? I have a set but I bought them x-mas 03'. I have roughly 15 grand into a engine I am building and I would hate some shitty came gears to ruin my project. Thanks for the heads up.
make sur you take out the keyway and put 35 lbs to the cam bolt and see if your cam gear spins if it does fine a washer to fit or just send them back!

the old Cusco cam gears used to be like that ... I bent valves in my stock GSR and figured it out after. This was about 8 yrs ago but same theory.
Also related to this, are the cams that break after torquing them with the inner facing gear seat not sitting flush with the cam, it will break over time after torquing.
to helping less fortunate customers

hey if the manufacturers wont look out for us who will! We try! i just dont think its cool for a company to have disclaimers that only protect themselves
and not the customer, as a builder it really reflects our reputation! we are only concentraiting on customers vehicles now and i have retired from professional racing this year to concentrait on my family and buiseniss! having a dyno thats only used for tuning is not where we want to be this year, we are doing a ton of
R & D on the dyno this year and it will all be common knowledge for anyone who asked and the product side of the buisness is finally coming together! good luck to all and remeber please let everyone know that these cam gears need to be checked before install!

Im glad to have helped you find the problem chad.....I hope S2 see's this and does somehting about it.....I also have a set that is doing the same thing...and i thought it was a fluke when I found a falty cam, but now some gears...Where's the money for QC going skunk?...
I’m not going to put down Skunk2 since every manufacturer will have some kind of issue sometime. I will though give a big
to A train. That is great to see a shop stand behind there customer against a manufacturer. That is a very rare trait these days!! Keep up the great work A train!!

Speaking of every manufacturer having issues, have you tried a different cam gear to make sure it is not the cam itself that maybe had poor machining? I've seen a cam come from a very well known manufacturer with the distributor keyway machined backwards, so the dude was running his firing order 180deg out... lol. just a thought.
thank you !!!!!!!!!!!!! Im not trying to beat up S2 for there mistakes we all make them but we also answer to our problems. This happened well over a month ago and i wasnt going to even post about it but i'd hate to see another motor someone saved all there money for go boom! Dont get me wrong i still use S2 stage 3 cams and they are great, I have had there coil overs on my race car forever, they make alot of good products and some bad, we all make mistakes but I try and own up to them. Just like my racing has taken over my life and I lost my family because of it and it's to late to repair that! My wife and i have separated and my kids are the one's to lose, Ive been an idiot for long enough and blind to the fact that a man with 3 kids should not be spending his money and time running all over the country racing for a dream that is not amounting to anything with out big sponsership dollars. So this year I am semi retiring from the sport i love so much, I am sticking to local events this year and putting my car up for sale but I wont sell it like a dope fiend for nearly nothing! the moral of the story is stand up and be acountable for your mistakes!
Wow, that really sucks about your family.
High price to pay for a sport we love. Hope things work out for you.
On topic: like you said, Skunk makes some good stuff, as well as bad. Run their coil overs on my racecar and love them. Love my Skunk Stage 2 cams too.

i can't stand when i see S2 cam gears with the TDC marks completely off. I just stay away from them. Good cams though.

a company as large as skunk2 with the funds to do R&D should never have released a faulty product if they had gone through the proper testing...period
