That is what i thought but the guy at quaife said the fluid I used could have damaged the disc. Any idea?

You sure you didn't call Kaaz or something? lol I've taken apart a few honda quaifes and there were no disks. This is a honda diff, right? Unless they've changed them in the past year or so, but I doubt that.

yup, standard gsr diff. What is inside there that could be damaged by a synthetic fluid(syncromesh friction mod)??

There's some small gears in there and some washers that press apart the gears, kinda like a phantom grip. The washers look bent, and keep tension that way. I forget what they're actually called. I can't imagine them being damaged by fluid! What exactly happened to yours?

They are called belleville washers and are conical shaped. They are approx 3/4" in diameter and are meant to load and not to slip. The quaife uses 6 of them and when placed together properly, work like a coiled spring. There are no clutch discs inside the quaife to slip or burn. Any gear oil ok for your tranny would be fine for the quaife's gears. Quaifes are guaranteed for life.

We broke a tranny in texas last year. Got a new tranny with new quaife and used the gm fluid. No matter what I do the car will only pull with the passenger tire. So I came to the conclusion that something must be wrong with the diff. I called quaife and explained the situation to them. He said I could have damaged the discs, he may have meant washers, and they do not recommend the gm fluid at all. He said only use what honda recommends because that is what the designed the diff to run. Anyway he said send it back to get it checked but I was wonderring it would be a waste of time to send it back.

You can send it to me if you like and I will take it to Quaife.
We have tried the GM fluid but found no difference in performance.

I was told the gm fluid would improve shifting but I came to the same conclusion, no difference. My wife runs 75w in her tranny with a quaife and it shifts like butter and pulls with both wheels.

Earl, would sending it to you speed up the process any? If so I will do it.

Probably not. I just thought you were not getting satisfaction with Quaife. Do you remember who you talked to, the person who mentioned "discs"?

No, the guy there was great. He said send it back and they would check it and fix it if need be. I just didnt want to send it back if there was no way anything could be broken inside. James was his name maybe???

The main reason I bought a Quaife over the Kaaz is because the Quaife had no disc..So it has to be the washers they are talking about..But I don't see how oil would affect them...

my understanding was that the sycromesh friction modified was too slick and would cause excessive slipping thereby damaging the washers.

The washers are nothing more than a coiled spring. They should never be hurt by fluid

Guys,

Earl and Tony are correct, there are no clutch disks. The "Bellville" washers are just there to take up slack in the differential. I am sorry that someone here said the "disks" may have been damaged by the use of GM's tranny fluid, that is untrue! Just to let you all know, the diff will opperate (sp?) without the internal spring washers.

Please send the diff back, attn: Brian with a small note about what you've found, and a copy of the original invoice. I personally will dis-assemble the diff and inspect/ repair it.

Sorry for the confusion,

Brian

Yeah, Brian is the right guy to talk to at Quaife. He is a racer and does all the R&D and tranny tech, etc.
